Windows Restarts while loading

Sup all,

I have recently been adding stuff on my already pretty stuffed computer. I have a Athlon XP 1900+  on an ASUS A7V266-E motherboard. I also have an ASUS V8170 64DDR RAM video card and a Creative Live 5.1 Sound card. I have recently added a Thermal Take Volcano 9 CoolMod fan for my CPU cause the one that came with the processor started to sound like an old car.

So i plugged in the fan power plug directly on the Motherboard, and when i turned it on the computer would restart when loading. So, i figured that the power wasnt enough, so i used the adapter that came with the Fan to plug it directly with the power supply. So now windows runs "ok".

But now, i have other problems... I have 2 sticks of ram: 256+ 512 = 768 right??? well, my comp is only reading 640MB.. Before, it was only reading 384MB, but i change the slots of the sticks and finally got 640MB...

But that's not all, also my mouse seems to be having problems too, but then again its a new one and it keeps giving me the problems of the old one... Every once in a while, i will automaticaly go to the top left corner of the screen...

All info is appriciated...

Take out the 256 MB chip and tell me what it reads.

Your memory problem may be due to using double-density chips on one stick which your motherboard may not support.  Run the memory configurator at www.crucial.com for your motherboard and you will find out what size, speed, and type of memory is compatable with it.

If you're running Win98, that's the max your system can see.

For your mouse, it depends on what OS you have.  For WinXP, see http:Q_20388019.html
That is exactly what i am thinking
not for the mouse thing though, just RAM.
The memory problem:
Your mainboard calls for single side, single bank memory. It has only three memory banks with three slots. Your memory is dual bank. Wrong memory for this mainboard. Using two dual bank memory chips requires a mainboard with 4 memory banks. One bank short...

Ok... well, the thing is that before my computer used to read the 768MB of RAM i have... unless of course, some of it blew, if that's even possible...

Is there a possibility that my PS doesnt have enough juice to feed the whole memory, because i noticed the problem after i installed my new fan. I also, read somewhere that windows restarts when loading because the power supply doesnt have enough juice to get trough. The thing is that when i tried putting back my old fan, the computer ran just fine... but i didnt check the memory.

>>unless of course, some of it blew, if that's even possible...
sure is

no, other things would not work before memory,

this is definetly a memory problem
You could have one single bank and one dual bank memory chip...a little confusing, but placed in the correct manner(dual bank chip in the first memory slot(1), single bank chip in the last slot(3) middle slot(2) left open, would work correctly as this configuration would only require three banks. Examine your memory modules for one with chips on both sides and one with chips on only one side.

ok... well, i ran some test and this is definetly NOT a memory problem...
Put my 256MB RAM stick on slot 1 and the computer read it as 256
Then i put it on the second and 3 slot and it read it as 128
Then i put my 512 on slot 1 and 256 on slot 2 and it read it as 640MB

So my sticks are fine...
any ideas anyone?

Ivan,

I checked over your motherboard. I'm wondering if you tried installing memory of the same size, like 2 X 256MB. It might read both memory sticks that way. I kinda remember this board some when I was working at a computer shop. Surprisingly it had about this same problem your having, small world. Do I remember how to fix it? Not completely! If you would like to brave a BIOS upgrade, it might help.

Later!

Same as before...your mainboard specifies single bank chips...try the 512 in slot (1) and the 256 in slot (3). Would you describe the memory chips as I asked, do they appear as single sided or double sided arrangements?

well.. i figured it out... my problem is that my power supply doesnt have enough juice to feed the whole computer... that's why my mouse is acting all weird and that windows would restart when loading...

Thanks all for your answers
