sorry, i know you guys get a hundred of these things...but i looked through, and the others didn't quite seem like mine...and heck, it's free points for you, anyway.
ok, here's what happened:
my computer worked fine up until yesterday. yesterday, a friend of mine (who knows more about this stuff than me) came by to help me with something else. while he was here, he helped me redo the cables/wires inside my computer with wire-ties. he also helped me remove a physical sensor for my CPU that was hooked up to a display on my case. (it wasn't giving accurate readings, anyway). he also took off hte heat sink and put it back on in a way that was less akward to get out. (old way, you had to take out the power supply to get a good angle on it) he put some thermal paste (or gunk, or whatever) to help even it out, to make up for the spot that the old sensor had been in.
the computer had worked fine up till when we turned it off. after doing the work, we turn it back on. fans spin and glow and make noise, cd drives light up, etc. but hard drive doesn't spin, no BIOS comes up, the screen just shows black and flashes a few times. no beep codes or anything.
we made sure RAM was plugged in, AGP card was in, etc. didn't work. made sure CPU was in all the way. it wasn't. put it in all the way. tried again. still didn't work. made sure the pc speaker was hooked up correctly. (tried it different ways.) still no beeps or anything.
we tried it without AGP card or RAM. still no beeps. today, i tried the RAM and video card from that comp in another one, and they worked fine. out of desparation, i took off the heatsink and put it back the old way. now, when i turn it on, it does the same thing, except it turns itself off after about 10 seconds or so. a few minutes ago, i tried disconnecting all hard drives, CD ROM drives, etc, making sure nothing was in except for the video card and RAM. still didn't work.
i am stumped. did we damage something physical while working? (my thoughts are CPU, it's the only thing we touched...) hopefully soon, i'm going to have another person with an AMD mobo come over and let me try my processor in their computer. until then, any ideas?
thanks in advance,
iggy
