USB Device Malfunctioned / Not Recognized

Hi,

I've been having trouble with this problem for quite a bit, and after just living with it, I figured I'd give it a try to fix it. And I know that the people that read these boards are brilliant, so I thought I'd give it a shot.

I have a Toshiba e335 Pocket PC and it worked great for a year. But a few months ago (just in time to be void from any type of warrentee) I stuck it in the cradle and I got an error bubble stating "USB Device had Malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it".

I have read some other postings, including https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20824773/Error-message-usb-divice-not-recognized.html but my problem seems to be a little different, in that, sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. Like a month ago i was using it and I got this error again. So I put it on the shelf. Brought it out last night, plugged it in, worked great. This morning, device not recognized. I don't understand it. As for drivers, all are up to date. And like i said, when it works, works great. So I don't know.

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 600m Laptop, running Windows XP Pro. I have multiple USB devices, and this is the only one that causes me the problem, but if I get the error and switch ports, with say, my printer, then my printer gives me the error (even for different ports, I'm not using the same ports over and over... I try the other ones too...)

Attached at the bottom is a list of my IRQ Conflict/Sharing info, in case that could help anyone in helping me! :)

Thanks again everyone, in advance, and I love EE (just waiting for my next paycheck before I get a yearly!).

Bick

Intermittent USB problems are among the most difficult to resolve - I plug in devices and get "unrecognized" messages, then I take them out and plug them in and suddenly they work, so you are not alone.  The only thing consistent may be that your device requires more power than your port is providing, so I would recommend getting a powered USB hub.

Callandor,
what do you think about 4 devices being on the same IRQ?
And then if there is devices on each USB port that would create more bottlenecks.

Does it matter which USB port you put it in?  Could be as simple as you have a bad port or have it hooked up wrong.
Multiple devices on the same IRQ shouldn't be a problem; that's what shared IRQs are for.  This is implemented in the driver, however, and judging from the number of problems with USB and the patches Microsoft puts out, it's not an exact science.  There's a heap of USB troubleshooting advice given here: http://www.usbman.com/Troubleshooter%20General.htm

Well, I can see how many USB might be a cause, but isn't USB supposed to hold like 120 devices or something...

I have my PPC powerd by AC, then that USB plugged directly into my docking station. Then i have a powered USB hub that supplies USB to printer, Smartphone, wireless remote, and mouse. I also have a USB portable hard drive plugged into 2 USB ports, docking station back, and docking station side (2 needed to power it).

Maybe i need to get another hub, but when I unplug the others it should work, right? Or I dont know... Thanks for your help.

WOW, you have a lot of USB stuff.

I think that Callandor might have hit the nail on the head when he said your device needs more power.  All though you do have it powered by AC.  :/  Maybe a PCI USB device would work better then have a hub.
I have a solitary USB webcam plugged into my USB card, and I can never tell if it will be recognized when I bring the application up.  I have not found a definitive answer that will solve all USB problems, all the time.
Ok, i don't know if this means anything, or if it will even help at all, but I just discoverd that if i have my phone in its cradle, plugged in to USB, the PocketPC is recognized by XP (but not by ActiveSync). But if I take my phone out, and just put in the PPC, i get the error. Interesting, huh? Like a reverse conflict thing, it works when the other one is plugged in, but doesn't otherwise. Any Ideas?

Thanks

Bick
That sounds like an unstable power draw in which the phone acts like a regulator.  Try it with a different device, instead of the phone.
Wow, even more interesting, that worked! I tryed it with a USB pen drive, and worked with it in, but not with it out. So thank you for that idea. Now, what in your opinion would be the solution to such a problem? And don't forget, the PPC is plugged directly into the wall as well as the docking station. Would you think a new powered hub would fix it or what?

Thanks so much for the help!

Well, out of shear fustration, I am giving up yet again, and assuming its a hardware failure on Toshiba's part (and is no longer covered by warentee). I have yet to try a new cradle, or hub, which i will do in the near future (but I am doubtful that it will solve the problem). Thank you guys for your help, and let me know if you come across anything else!

Bick
your welcome.
Buy a high quality USB hub. Do not buy one of those cheap no name brands that work with 90% of USB devices. I bought a Belkin TetraHub™ USB 2.0 4-Port Hub. It keeps each device separated from the others somehow and seems to have fixed my problem which was the same as yours. I was at wits end, getting so frustrated I shelfed my iPAQ for months.  It was a nice 4350 too. Anyway I'm happy again.
wow... thank you so much! I have shelfed mine too, and was just wanting to use it again! I have a crapy hub, so maybe I'll get that Belkin one... Thanks again!
Ok, just planning on going out an buying a better hub, thought I would post to ask gearmesh how everythings running? Have any problems with it? If not, I'm going to get that TetraHub, because I would liket to use it again! :)

Thanks

Bick
I have the same problem, but the port is in my laptop - no external hub. My canon sureshot gets enumerated if I have my palm plugged in. Sometimes.
I'm not sure I understand the solution chosen. What did the auther finally do?
