Can I use USB floppy drive to boot up my desktop ?

Hello,

Can I use external USB floppy drive to boot up my desktop ? just like normal internal floppy drive.
Do I need to check if my motherboard support it or not ?  If yes, how ?

Thanks.

I am using ASUS P4PE motherboard.

Thanks!
well thats new enough to have usb booting so check the bios for boot order and make boot other enabled

Also make sure that your usb floppy is plugged into the motherboard usb ports not say a pci usb hub as these ports will be much better at this kind of thing
Yep it will, everyone is correct.

The last three systems I built were with the ASUS P4P800SE Deluxe, ASUS P4C800-E, and an ASUS P5AD2-Premium (this one is the one I am using now) will all boot from a USB Floppy, as mentioned above, press the Delete Key on you Keyboard during P.O.S.T.

Right arrow over to Boot, then scroll down to Boot Devices/Boot order and make sure you have it set as the first in line.

I just checked the BIOS menu, in the "Other Boot Device" options, only "SCSI/Onboard ATA Boot Device" and "INT18 Device (Network)" are shown.  No USB related items is there ??

Do I need to plug in the USB floopy device in order to make the option appear in the menu ??

So do you mean that after the USB floppy is properly connected to the computer, "USB device" option will be shown in the "Other Boot Device" menu ?

> If software drivers came with it, make sure they are loaded.

I want to use the USB floppy to boot up the computer, how can I load the driver before the computer boot up ?
Actually I haven't bought the floppy drive yet, I want to make sure it can be used to bootup the computer first.

> You may have to configure it in the BIOS Drives area before you go to the boot order.

Not sure how to configure it, could you explain more ?

Thanks
ray read here about your motherbaord specifications >> http://www.asus.com/mb/socket478/p4pe/overview.htm
there is no mentioning that it can boot with a usb floppy..... and when you will click on the download drivers link, you will get page cannot be displayed.....!! i think we are stcuked.... =\

so.... what should I do ?

what can we do.... we cannot force the motherboard to recognise an external USB floppy when it cannot.... we could think about the BIOS update.... but you can see that Asus links are dead...... what else,,,, either wait to see if Asus fixes its links so that we can look for the updated BIOS..... or.....
btw will you mind to tell that what are you trying to do for which you need to boot with this floppy drive ??

the internal floppy is dead, so I want to buy a external one which I can use it both on my laptop and desktop.
so that means you are just collecting the general information.... not any case of immergency or severe problem ?? :)

yes. The floppy drive is quite important to the computer, if I don't fix the problem now, it will have severe problem later.
I can guess..... but the matter is that what we can do at this time when motherboard cannot support an external floppy and we cannot manage to get any updated BIOS or drivers from Asus..... =\
