Configuration:
ASUS P4P800-SE
P4 3.0 Prescott
2x256 MB Dual Channal PC3200 RAM
120 Gb SATA hard drive
CD-RW/DVD ROM combo drive
ATI AIW 9600XT, using Catalyst drivers downloaded on 10/5/2004
Windows XP Home SP2
I got this system last August.
In the beginning, the USB ports worked fine. At some point, they stopped working; I'm not exactly sure when they stopped because I don't use them that frequently.
Things I might have done between when they last worked and now:
- Upgraded from XP SP1 to XP SP2
- Upgraded to the (at the time) current Catalyst drivers and conrol panel
- installed a bunch of software such as Lavasoft, Ad-Aware, antivirus software (AVG 7.0 free edition, since uninstalled), FireFox, Doom 3 demo, lots of other software.
I know the ports are not completely dead, because when I plug in my mp3 player to any of the usb ports, the player's screen says "USB connected". When I run the program to download files, I get a "cannot connect to device" message. My scanner software reports "cannot access data source", although when I plug the cable in it beeps, which indicates it detected something on the port.
The device manager has 4 entries of "Intel(R)82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24D2" (the characters at the end are different for each - 24D2, 24D4, 24D7, 24DE), one entry of "Intel(R)82801EB US2B Universal Host Controller - 24DD", and 5 entries of "USB Root Hub". The BIOS is set for 8 USB ports.
From searching in EE, this seems to be a common problem, and I've tried some of the ideas in other solutions. Things I've tried:
- Booting into safe mode; I get the same behavior
- Uninstalling all of the USB hubs and controllers in the device manager and letting XP find them and reinstall them (both in safe mode and regular mode); same behavior
- Tried using a powered USB hub; same behavior
- Downloaded a utility from usbman.com to check my usb setup (usbready.exe), it indicated everything was OK.
If anyone has some suggestions about what the problem might be and how to resolve it, I'd be grateful. "Reinstalling XP after reformatting the drive" is an absolute last resort because it would be intensely painful - it would take days to get this machine set up again; I would try buying a USB PCI card and seeing if that worked first.
Thanks!
