Try removing the CMOS battery for half an hour, and then put it back.  The CMOS battery is the coin-sized battery that keeps your CMOS settings and is usually accessed by removing the bottom panels.

Not that I am aware of.  You have to remove the battery to the laptop, and remove the keyboard and short circuit the battery to clear the CMOS.  Most laptops have a soldered battery.  If so, you need to cut it, then re-solder it.  If you are worried about soldering close to the motherboard, radio shack has heatless solder.  That's about the only way I know of.  Depending on your model it might be hard to get to the battery, causing you to remove quite a few parts.

is there anyway whitout opening the laptop?
Contact the bios manufacturer.  BIOS have manufacturers passwords that will bypass your password.  Since it is an old system, they will most likely give it to you.

Good Luck,
Dr. Z
I think Dell has their BIOS customized, the only way is to contact Dell directly, but you will need the original owners info before they can help you if I remember correctly.

Even then, I don't think they are likely to give him a protected password, I'm sure level I & II techs don't even have it.  How would they know he wasn't calling with his boss's laptop in his hands? :)  I know of no ther way then "cracking" it open....Sorry xodos...
Yes, you can crack this password if that is not set as Power on password ( the one which prompts right when you start the machine ).

If you are still able to boot into Windows do this:

Restart in Ms-DOS mode

Type DEBUG
Press Enter
Type O 70 18
Press Enter
Type O 71 FF
Press Enter
Type Q
Press Enter
Power the system off and on by unplugging and re-plugging the system into the power outlet

Try removing the laptops main battery, let it set for awhile then press the Power On button.  Then reconnect your battery and power plug and restart the laptop.  Doesn't always work, but worth a try.
What's the service tag number?
Please check this link for a detailed procedure of reseting your password:

>> a pin size hole <<   So THAT'S what that is for! Someone gave me an old Toshiba laptop with a small hole on the bottom front, marked Reset.  Thank!   : )
Shouldn't that be a paperclip sized hole?  Some damage may result if not! ;]

Is the author of this question paying any attention to this thread anymore?
>> Shouldn't that be a paperclip sized hole? <<   Actually, mine is more like 1/8 inch (minijack sized).

>> paying any attention...anymore? <<   Only God and xodos know for sure.  : D
Some of the older BIOSes can be reset by down grading to and earlier version of the bios and then upgrading back to the newest version worth a try, also DELL has a "master" BIOS password for most of their systems, but like what what posted earlier you will have to know the S/N and the orriginal ownership information.

Good Luck
Nice site amIT!  I have a Dell.  It might come in usefull!
U need to phone into Dell directly with this problem - there is no master BIOS password for a Dell Laptop - Dell technicians will be able to generate one specific to your service tag as long as you can verify that you are the owner of the system (must know company name, address etc.)
There is no physical or logical way to crack a Dell BIOS password. The only way to get around it is to contact Dell. Each Dell machine has an 'administrator' BIOS password based on the machine's serial number. If you contact Dell I think they ask you for the serial number and some sort of proof of purchase before giving you the admin BIOS password.

Good Luck
p.s. Dell's don't have any such pin or paperclip sized holes! Maybe the older Dell's did, but certainly not the newer notebooks. My company had about 5 Latitudes sitting around as paper-weights because users forgot the BIOS passwords. I dismantled one to it's extreme looking for a button or jumper to reset it BIOS. Also took out the CMOS battery for a complete day and didn't work! Found the solution when we contacted Dell.
Coral47: if you need to remove the password on a toshiba, you need a parallel port dongle that does it for you when you power the unit on. I used to work in a service center we charged like $50 for a 10 second procedure. You can only get that dongle when you pass a Toshiba certification. Im sure you can find them on ebay by now.

As far as the dell goes, post your service tag or express service code. I want to look at the motherboard type, maybe then we could see another way of doing this. But i have to tell you, you might have to take the unit apart, which is really not that difficult.

PS: what password did you set? Power on, HD, or Boot Up. I know someone asked this already.

PPS: be lucky you dont have an IBM, there is no possible way to clear a bios password without changing the motherboard.
NYITSUPPORT: Thanks for the info. I finally got the Toshiba manual to load on my main system (what a pain!!), and the hole I was looking at seems to be a system reset (same as C-A-D), and not a BIOS clear.
Hi

for your dell laptop u can try this

U can give ac power & barry & then by prassing the CONTROL+ALT+E KEY THEN POWER ON THE SYSTEM & CHECK.

MANGLESH
well not sure if the problem has been solved , juz here to share my idea

for desktop , u can solve that problem by removing the BIOS battery to short-circuit it then put it back

guess that can be done by removing the BIOS battery in ur notebook as well..

good luck...
Hi,

A sure way to get the bios password for the system, provided it is registered to you is to call technical support for this. I had a friend with the same problem and they may be able to provide you with an "overide" code to get into the bios and change the password or disable it.

Hope this helps you resolve the problem.

regards
To obtain the password, you have to call Dell technical support line on 800-624-9896. Provide the system ID or the Service tag. After verifying information that validates the purchase of unit, tech support would give in the master password. Type in the master password and then hold down the <CTRL> and <Enter> keys at the same time. This would clear all the passwords.
