asked on

external widescreen seen as 4:3 aspect

I  have recently purchsed an ACER 19" widescreen external monitor and connected it via DVI (only connection) to my Toshiba laptop running a NVidia Geforce Go5200 card. I cannot get it to operate in widescreen mode, nor can I get it to have the correct resolution.

Can someone help, please?

Cheers,
Peter

Have you installed the monitor driver?
Have you installed the latest NVIDIA driver?

In addition,check your display settings (right-click on the desktop, choose PROPERTIES, go to the SETTINGS tab and select the appropriate resolution).  You MAY have dual monitor select, it will appear as 1 or 2, check the matching settings.

ASKER

good questions,
I thought of these and
1. no monitor driver supplied, and webiste not listing one.
2. can't find any other nvidia driver
3. monitor listed as plug and play monitor

Keep trying please.
what's the model # of the ACER monitor?
model of toshiba laptop?
monitor is AL1916W (VGA input only)  toshiba satellite M30
Have a look at this " http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=15324 "

Drivers for Nvidia at " http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_81.98.html "

Have a try !

Best Regards !
The M30 has a sub#...  S309, S3091, S35, S351.. could you check next to the serial number for the exact # plz?
drivers for nvidia not compatible with hardware, thanks for trying. Still looking at the gaming forum
Hey.. don't have to look for the model #.. the M30 series have the save video card.  In the User guide and specifications;
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_outFrm.jsp?moid=513361&ct=DS&soid=638270&BV_SessionID=@@@@1051264327.1135870201@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccccaddgijjifehcgfkceghdgngdgnj.0

Th NVIDIA Go5200 supports the following resolutions;
640  x 480
800 x 600
1024 x 768
1280 x 1024
1600 x 1200
1920 x 1440
2048 x 1536

All above resolutions display 4:3.  I believe you're out of luck.  You should get 16:9 out of the S-VIDEO from your notebook when you play DVD's OR if you're running the digital connection.
model number PSM30A-ORU39 (if relevant it was bought in australia, I have looked at the US model numbers and they don't seem to correspond very well)

Configure a custom desktop resolution like 1024x576 or 1280x720 for use with that external monitor using PowerStrip, and you should have the 16:9 aspect ratio you desire.
I was going to suggest this but...

Here is the download link;

Keep in mind that although this software MAY allow you to adjust settings, it will always be an overlaying piece of software that will run in the background

thanks to everyone involved. I'll try powerstrip and see how I go.
Those drivers for Nvidia should work !

All the research I've down in the mean time, told me that no drivers are supplied, and that you must obtain the Latest Drivers from your Graphics Adapter Manufacturer in order to achieve so . . .

Best Regards!
So many differing opinions from the experts - what to do?
The one that works... wins!
nothing so far
Ok... if Powerstrip doesn't work.. then "I believe you're out of luck" wins.
Not yet.
