No Audio Device

A few days ago the sound on my system suddenly just stopped. Clicking on the "Sounds and Audio Device Properties" in the control panel reveals that I have "No Audio Device", and all of the settings are greyed out.

After some googling, and around 7 hours of rebooting/installing/etc I found that uninstalling and re-installing the device drivers has no effect what so ever. When I uninstall, and reboot, the computer simply reinstalls the original driver quietly (it does not display any dialog that it is doing this). I have tried these processes in safe mode and normal of course.

I'm at a loss now. I found some good articles using google, but none of them have worked for me.

I would be very open to any suggestions from the community, and have pre-emptively attached my dxdiag details below in order to assist.

Please can someone help?

You didn't install any new hardware about the time this happened?
Have you tried replacing your sound card with a new one?  At a glance, I'd guess your sond controller has died.  If it's on board, make sure it hasn't been disabled in CMOS.  Scrounge up another somewhere and see if it works.

You should make sure you are specifying that this is a laptop when you post, because they require different solutions than desktops.

Try installing the motherboard drivers from the manufacturer's website, because they will include drivers for the onboard sound.

Sorry, yes this is a laptop with integrated sound. Its a HP Pavillion zx5000 Series. My apologies.

I'll try the motherboard drivers and report back.

Strangely enough, I didnt install any new hardware, however at the same exact time my external harddrive crashed and I lost two of the partitions (unfortunately one of them was the backup partition).
hi
the logic said :
try to rinstall sound card driver ... and searching for update to your driver from www.hp.com they have strong support to your system
if it's not work ... let we thinking with other way ... your sound card is bultin or PCI card ? if bultin try to install external and see what happend . and as  WGhen said check ur bois if it enabled or not ...if that not work  it's most likely sound card is not work ...if it's external try to change it with other one .

Could not find any Motherboard driver packages, however, reinstalling the audio drivers just results in the error "Driver not found, reboot your system and run this setup again".
wow ... it's laptop ... try to install external Sound Card
Try this...

Go to the Hardware device manager

Under system devices, click on 'plug and play enumerator' check the driver to see if it's digitally signed.

Update this driver,

restart your system,

and see if you can then update your audio drivers.
mmm...OK did you try removing the drivers from your device manager. then reboot your pc and then scan for new hardware windows should pick them up automatically if not then your sound card needs to be replaced.

also did you try using system restore to an earlier date.?

jimmymcp02, please read the previous posts which stipulate that this is a laptop and that he has already tried uninstalling and re-installing the device drivers.

I have tried the latest drivers and still not working, even following the tedious steps of the HP Troubleshooting.

I can not find a 'plug and play enumerator' - evenwhen displaying hidden devices.

Ive updated the BIOS aswell.

When I right click on the devices under Computer Management, and select update this driver, it searches and then always reports back "Cannot find better drivers" - I wonder if this even works?
> I wonder if this even works?

That's a good question.  Booting to a different OS would resolve if it is a Windows driver problem or a hardware problem, but this would require a lengthy install and a separate partition.

I read something about .Net Framework 2.0 messing with DirectX, so Ill try uninstalling it. Its really frustrating, Ive read a lot on google about this exact same problem with the NO AUDIO DEVICE and the greyed out options in the control panel, but the fixes listed for the other folk do not work for me -- if anyone has any ideas Im open to any suggestion! :)

You may want to try booting a Knoppix CD and see if it has working audio.  At least it will tell you if your hardware works.
Did you check for viruses or spyware?
jadeia i didnt say update or reinstall..

I said remove the drives....(meaning select the device from device manager and then delete now reboot then windows should pick it up upon start) but i guess you already did that. my bad then

Maybe i said it wrong. well i'll come back. going to do some research...

Yes I did find a trojan and removed it with Sophos SAV.

I deleted the drivers from the Device Manager, and when I reboot, Windows silently re-installs them (no option to cancel) and Im back where I started. Strangely, the devices seem to be working fine - they do not have yellow exclamation marks against them. For some reason though, the Audio Device itself just fails to work, although examining all the drivers attached to it say it is working fine?

Except dxdiag, which clearly says the audio is not even installed...

A real hair puller this one.
"Strangely enough, I didnt install any new hardware, however at the same exact time my external harddrive crashed and I lost two of the partitions (unfortunately one of them was the backup partition)."

You mean hard drive went bad or files got corrupted...so im asking hardware or software issue...if it was software then that doesnt have anything to do with the issue here. if it was hardware then that something different. it sound like the card might have receive some sort of electric shock from the usb port or the drive itself (asuming that you have the hard drive next to it or that the usp port are next to the sound card)

please give me some details

The external hard drive has (had) three partitions.

One of them I used as my root path for My Documents etc, (so if you chose My Documents, it took you to the exernal drive)
One partition was for Media (music, movies, etc)
One partition I used for backing up my laptops

I went out for a few hours, came back (left the laptop on) and found everything going very very slow.. Seems the first partition (the one I was using as the root My Documents drive) had become unreadable. Loading it up in Acronis Disk Doctor/Paritioner it seemed it was no longer recognised as a NTFS or FAT32 drive - just neither. So all my documents on it were unreadable. Seems the Backup partition too was the same - unreadable. However the "middle" paritition was fine (containing all the media).

While testing the media, I realised I had no sound... Hence this post from the top.

I found that while the hard drive was connected the whole laptop ran slow.. I am talking 3-5 minutes to load up Windows explorer, 10 minutes to start up, 10 mins to shut down. If I took the harddrive offline, it was fine. So I deleted the two "damaged" partitions and now everything is fine in that regard - I can leave it hooked up as normal, and have perfectly swift access to the Media partition and also my usual laptop.

I also noted that when running a Virus scan, it found and deleted a Trojan (IBM0001 files) so I did a full deep scan and removed all traces - it just found the one IBM0001 file.

Im more or less recovered (except my lost data on the two parititions) but have absolutely no sound. I just reinstalled all the drivers from my HP Laptop CD recovery and still no sound :)
i dont kown about chipset drivers but have you tried re-installing them?

we running out of ideas here?

any power outages recently? I'm trying not to think that the sound card is damage

When I try to install that one, I get the "Driver not found, reboot and try again message" which will (from experience earlier) put me in the cycle of "reboot - install - error" rinse and repeat :) heh

No power troubles as far as I'm aware, plus I have a surge protector unit on the laptop gear...  This is driving me nuts!

Being a laptop integrated card, is it still possible for just the sound part to die? I guess trying the Knoppix idea is a sure way to test that, so might look into that (new to me entirely).

oh, yeah....there was one more thing I did while the virus scan was in process...
I checked all of my devices in device manager (properties, driver tab) to make sure I had a digital signature for all of my drivers.  I had a USB card that was not signed, so I updated that.

Thanks. I definately do not have a "plug and play software enumerator" driver anywhere in Device Manager...  Could this be the reason for my troubles??
If you go to device manager there is a category for 'system devices' it's got a computerlike icon next to it and a (+) plus sign.

If you click the + next to 'system devices', you should see several devices, the 'plug and play software enumerator' should be listed.
if it's not there...I'm sure this is your problem!

I'm researching where to get it if it's missing.

Your dead right.. I found this and this fixed it straight away! Its never been so good to hear that windows chime!!!

YARRRR!!!!!!

From an MSDOS cmd prompt type or cut and paste md \temp cd \temp copy %windir%\inf\machine.inf \temp\allmachine.inf
copy %windir%\system32\drivers\swenum.sys \temp
copy %windir%\system32\streamci.dll \temp
notepad \temp\allmachine.inf

Using notepad go to line 22 (CTRL-G 22) which should be ExcludeFromSelect=* delete and remove that line wherever you find it (Line 20 maybe) and save the file We're finished that part.

Notepad and the cmd prompt can be closed.

%windir% was probably c:\windows\ and that was automatically be expanded in the windows cmd prompt.

Now, just go to Add Hardware, add a new hardware device there at the bottom, install from list, next, have disk, and select the temp directory where we copied the files (c:\temp\ in the example here).

You should have all the different machine level services listed since we've removed the ExcludeFromSelect=* which hid them all. We only want to add Plug and Play Software Enumerator and nothing else so select and install only that.
I found this info about reinstalling the Plug and play software enumerator:

...............................................................
copy machine.inf from %windir%\inf to a temp dir
remove line 20: ExcludeFromSelect=*

add new hardware have disk (select the temp dir with the modified machine.inf) and
install the plug and play software enumerator

swenum.sys is found in system32\drivers
streamci.dll is found in system32
or they can be found on your windows disk
................................................................

Note:  In order to see these files..
go to TOOLS (in explorer)
select FOLDER OPTIONS
click tab VIEW
look at advanced settings and click radio button for: Show Hidden Files and Folders
and   UNcheck the box for:  Hide Protected Operating System Files

If you do this successfully, after a reboot, update the drivers if it is not digitally signed.

Thankyou everyone, and special thanks to Maramon for the Plug and Play Enumerator.. Damn, what a nasty Virus - I guess it was the cause of all this the whole time. Shesh.
