Hard Drive Cable Extender or SATA Adapter

OK, I just got a Dell e510 and foud out that the Hard Drive (HD) configuration is different than my current computer.  I used IDE cables for mine, and now I can't put them in because there is a different connection (small thin male connector from MoBo) I am not familiar with.  They call it a Serial ATA Hard Drive .  I can connect one extra HD that I used one of the extra CD ROM IDE cables for.  I guess there are a couple of questions in this...
1.) Are there adapters I can use to adapt my old HD to work with this?
2.) If not...Are there IDE "extension" cables?  New egg had 36" cables, but I might need longer due to the setup of the case.  I'd rather not get a PCI card for this.
I imagine this is pretty easy for an expert so I'll assign 50 points to each question...:)

perhaps you want to go to CompUSA or local computer store to get one.
whoops...

I misread your question..

#1 = NO

... I don't think there's anything useful in going "the other way around" here :-)

#1 ==> YES    Use this:  http://www.granitedigital.com/catalog/pg52_satabridgeboards.htm

#2 ==> Just use a normal SATA cable  (NOT your old IDE cables)
... obviously be sure you get the IDE to SATA board from the link I provided  (part #1085 for $28.95)
@garycase...I was hunting one of those down a few weeks ago...spend hours looking for it.. and just waved my hands up in the air...good find.
also another idea for the ide hdd(s) is an external usb and/or firewire enclosure, the e510 can only hold 2 hdds.

Yeah I saw the extrnal option, but cost-wise, the IDE-SATA adapter looks better.
I am aware of the 2 HD configuration.  I want to use both SATA drive as well as the extra IDE cable they have for a CD-ROM drive.  I can mount another HD in the bay for a 2nd CD-ROM.
Thanks for all the responses!
cool. thank you!
Interesting -- I thought you wanted to use an IDE drive with a SATA controller.
Minka,

Just for my own clarification, were you trying to connect an IDE drive to a SATA connection on the new Dell?   irwinpks and I had a bit of a discussion about this question in another thread, and I'd like to clarify which way you were making this connection.   I thought from your question that you had an IDE drive from your old computer and wanted to connect it to one of the SATA connections in your new Dell.   Is that correct?
@minka...your decision determines who gets a beer ;-)
Minka -- are you still there ???
....the beer is mine!! ;-)
irwinpks -- for someone who repeatedly posts "wrong answer accepted" notes in CS AND complains about the distribution of points in many other questions (both of which are practices not followed by most of the top experts here) -- you seem remarkably unconcerned about it when one of YOUR wrong answers is accepted.   I could care less about the points here -- I'm just curious why an obviously wrong answer was accepted.

Consider:

(1)  in the "old" computer:  " I used IDE cables "

(2)  in the "new" computer:  " now I can't put them in ... because there is a different connection (small thin male connector from MoBo) ...They call it a Serial ATA Hard Drive "

First part of question:  1.) Are there adapters I can use to adapt my old HD to work with this?
YOUR answer: (after a too-quick response without thinking about the details):  whoops... I misread your question.. #1 = NO

Since you like to post "Wrong answer accepted" posts in CS, I'm surprised you didn't post one for this :-)   (I'm sure you KNOW that's the case)

Minka -- sorry for the diversion;   I just felt compelled to respond here.   It would still be interesting to know why you accepted a reply that links to the wrong adapter for your IDE drive :-)
@garycase

"irwinpks -- for someone who repeatedly posts "wrong answer accepted" notes in CS AND complains about the distribution of points in many other questions (both of which are practices not followed by most of the top experts here) -- you seem remarkably unconcerned about it when one of YOUR wrong answers is accepted."

If you ask, you "may" get.  If I do nothing, I deserve nothing.  Can't tell you why the other top experts don't do the same or why they passively accept what is there.

"I could care less about the points here --"
When you remove references in your profile that mentions points (9x) and certification (5x), then I'll believe you 100% ;-)

Now Gary, there are 2 options I propose for you...
- Minka returns...and provides enlightenment...perhaps I'm right, or you're right, or we're both right...we can deal with it then
- Minka doesn't return..say 2 weeks from now 5/13...I suggest that if this bugs you to no end, then I'll post this in support to remove the question.

Sound fair and appropriate?

I got 372339 points this month alone, and frankly, it just feels like 0 as it is not worth anything...I just like helping people. :-)

@minka, please review...

... no reason to remove the question -- it's just interesting that you don't seem to understand your answer was WRONG !!   (I think you do, but are just stubborn)

I think it's fairly clear you're goal is the accumulation of points -- firewalling posts in 88 different TA's as quickly as you can is hardly an indicator of anything else.   I think that's less helpful than spending more time actually analyzing the issues and crafting specific reponses that may be helpful -- you clearly have the experience to do that, but are (in my view) becoming another "list poster" who comes across as chasing points more than helping.   You will get points -- sometimes for right answers, sometimes for wrong answers, and sometimes just for your persistence -- and if that's your goal, then so be it.

The top experts tend to focus on just a few topic areas and try to do them very well.   An excellent measure of how well they're doing is their percentage of accepted/assisted answers.   Just look at (Questions Answered) / [(Questions Answered) + (Questions Participated)].   Only a handful of the top 100 experts top 70% by this measure -- but almost all are above 50% (and they do that without complaining when their answers don't get accepted).  A quick scan of the top 25 experts shows 3 have 70% or better (the best is oBda, with 73.9%).

Okay ... I'll get off my soapbox now :-)
"list poster" ....hmmm...that's what you call it?  Well, most of the questions I've participated in was take my best shot, and see what happens. Evaluated the outcome, and take my next best shot, and so forth, till expired OR, someone else jumps in and posts a working solution.  You and I both participate in the same Topics, so if you haven't noticed that pattern yet...there is something to take a look at.  Sometimes I don't participate after YOU comment..because I believe it is worthy and not compelled to break the train of thought of what has transpired by your response.

You mentioning crafting specific responses...here is an example of some hand holding that transpired over 10 days, for an individual that stuck it out with me (one of many questions)

Surely, by reading the above you could determine, if I'm flaking on the guy or not. Like I said, one of many solutions I provided with genuine helpful intent.  I could've just kissed this question good-bye, but sincerely helped him through the process.

Here's a more recent one:

Overall, it is a learning process, and I respect "most" things that you Gary, say. :-)

'firewalling posts in 88 different TA's as quickly as you can is hardly an indicator of anything else"...how about because I know or have experience with the topics? Clearly, if something is there and I can't answer it, I won't even touch it.  Sound logical?

"The top experts tend to focus on just a few topic areas and try to do them very well......"
You know that this is a good gauge to follow but not bullet proof. Such as I'm 42.8%, if you look at the current stats. However, in the past 3 weeks, I've commented on 750+ questions, that yet have to be closed.  Say I get 500 of them and apply to the numbers today.. that would make it 63%.  Which is above 50%...and perhaps the top echelon of the Experts here....and the kicker is, that the more I participate, the bigger my EE toolbox of solutions get, and the quicker response with the most exact possible answers are supplied.

"Okay ... I'll get off my soapbox now :-) "

Don't forget to take it with you... :-D
