Digitizing VHS Video onto a computer?

What is the best method/hardware for makeing VHS video Digital so that it can be edited and stored on a computer?

I am using a PC (It's times like this where I wish I was using a Mac ;), and I'd like to connect my VHS player up to my PC and record some personal home video tapes to my computer, but I don't know what device to get.

Is there a USB device that can do this?
I wanted to do this using my laptop. So a PCI card won't work :(
The ADS Video Xpress on the same page - check your system requirements, because there is a minimum hardware configuration.
get a standalone dvr recorder and save all the headaches associated with making editing etc a dvd. a dvr you hook up your camcorder to firewire or video port and hit record on the DVR insert a blank dvd-r or +r and away you go.

if you insist on doing it the hard way get a dazzle from bestbuy and you are on your way it includes everything you need software and the usb adapter to your camcorder etc etc.

Enjoy your home movies on your DVD.

I want to make sure you know what piece of hardware in recommending her is a sample:
Samsung DVD-R120 Standalone DVD Recorder , or any other standalone DVD recorder.
It will make your life much easier. I transferred all of our wedding videos and vacation videos as well with minimal interference from me to only hit record on one unit and play on the other and my dvd's play on anyones machines. My mom loved seeing the wedding stuff again.

Enjoy, Joel
Do any of these USB devices that are recommended use Hardware Encoding or are they all Software?
This is a recurring question, and there have been several postings.   I've converted dozens of old tapes on a PC, but there are several issues to be aware of when doing this ==> I've discussed the process in quite a bit of detail before in this post:  https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/21707436/Convert-old-VHS-to-DVD-Need-Help.html

As you'll see by reading that, I recommend that with today's prices you should do as suggested above and simply buy a dedicated DVD recorder.   That eliminates the voice synchronization issues;  and once you've got the tapes in digital form you can TRIVIALLY copy them to the PC for further editing, if desired [just insert the DVD and copy it :-) ].   The recorder I suggested in that earlier post is no longer available; but there are many good options --> the Samsung suggested above is fine;  this is a higher end unit that can record on both +R and -R media in addition to DVD-RAM -> it makes a great DVR, so it's useful long after you've copied your vidoes (the Samsung only writes to -R media):  http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/item/features/484299142
