Drivers missing after XP Pro install - Compaq SR1950NX

Hi! This is my first question, though I've found this site helpful for years.

So -- I bought a cheap open-box Compaq Presario SR1950NX with Win Media Center Edition. I need it to run XP Pro for software/networking reasons, so I deleted the partition of the hard drive where MCE was installed and reinstalled XP Pro. Now, there's a few drivers that I'm missing and can't seem to track down.

The main problem is that the pc is not recognizing the network card, so I can't connect to my server/go online. Here are the devices that are flagged in my device manager:

Other PCI bridge device
PCI simple communications controller
SM Bus controller
Unknown device

I tried using 2 hardware information programs like Everest to get more info on these, but they didn't tell me anything new -- same info as the device manager gives.

As far as I can tell, the motherboard is an ASUSTek NAGAMI2 with an Nvidia GeForce 6150 (C51) + MCP51 chipset. I think, from what I've been able to gather from HP and other support forums,  the ethernet card is integrated into this and the drivers for the motherboard would get it working. But that's where I hit the wall -- I'm not sure if that's actually the problem, and I can't find any drivers for it anyway. (Among other places, I looked at driverguide.com but didn't find anything for an ASUSTek Nagami2.)

There is a recovery partition on the hard drive from the initial install of MCE. However, I can't seem to access it, pressing F10 at startup doesn't do anything, it just goes into Windows normally. I think I could get recovery disks from HP, but I'd rather not.

Any advice? Thanks!

Hi carriedoo,
You could just go buy a NIC from your local Giant Computer Store - they are very cheap and come with the proper drivers.

Post back when you can.

Younghv,
Are there any downsides to doing that?
Would those 4 driverless devices just hang out forever in my device manager? Is that OK?
I just am wondering, as I don't know what they are, and I don't know what the system would be missing if they stayed unresolved and I circumvented the problem by installing a new NIC.
Thanks!

Could be part of this package also: http://www.nvidia.com/page/nbp_download.html
The machines spec page is here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00683208&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3184153&lang=en

The mother board is a Asus A8N-LA it may be worth looking for drivers at Asus's site

The lan card is a Realtek RTL8201CL so you may find the drivers on the realtek site or even be able to select them off the windows CD.

You shoul dbe able to get the  drivers directly from HP for your machine.

Delete the unidentified devices, install drivers and reboot. hey should be detected and if not, use the Update Driver option and point it to either the inf directory or the Driver *.inf files.

I hope this helps !
Asus doesn't show that mb and the HP site doesn't show the drivers he is looking for.
Carrie,
SysExpert's advice is right on.
Delete the unknown devices and drive on.

I'm trying stuff out, I'll let you guys know how it goes...

but yeah, first place I went after reinstalling XP was the HP site to look for the drivers, and I didn't see the drivers I thought I needed...I installed what was there but it didn't help. Here's the page:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&tool=softwareCategory&query=Presario%20SR1950NX&product=3184153

They also have this model on file as XP Home, though mine shipped with MCE.
download driver magician - http://www.drivermagician.com/ and install on the problem machine as a 30 day trial, don't worry about registering (unless you want to pay the $30 or whatever it is). then go to Tools>detect unknown devices. this will give you the name and model number for all unknown devices so you can google them and download the drivers yourself.
also, i don't have the windows cd, I have no documentation, and can't access the recovery partition on the hard drive for reasons I don't understand. (says press f10, I do, nuthin' happens...)
(says press f10, I do, nuthin' happens...)

If you're not getting ANY response when you hit a key during boot up, it could be your type of keyboard.
If you're using USB or wireless, swap out for a PS2 board and try again.

Vic,
Thanks, but I can get into setup fine, it's just the f10/recovery option that doesn't work...figures.

But actually things are now half healed! Thanks to the NVidia driver package that jsvor suggested, the machine is now online...I'm checkin' it all out as we speak...there's still 2 unknown devices i want to figure out, hopefully drivermagician will help but I haven't tried that yet.

Thanks everyone, things are looking up!
Assuming you have a "Standard" out of the box product you probably will find a working solution with one of the following links.

Otherwise the chipset drivers should be located here.

And while you are at it, unless there is a need to secure all of the data on it currently I would re-install the OS with a clean install including an entire reformat of the system to help alleviate future issues. Since youbought it open box and possibly used there is no telling what status the system really is in. This way you have full knowledge of what has or has not been done to the OS and the system settings.
Installing XP Service Pack 2 and running Windows update right after a fresh install takes care of LOTS of little problems like this.

It's the only way to get drivers that are otherwise "built into Windows" but which came out after you XP CD was made.

.
What are the two devices you are left with?
I know exactly what you are going through.  I just wiped out an HP MCE pc and put on XP Pro and found that HP's support on my model (a1412n) sucked.  I feel your pain.
Out of everything suggested, the Nvidia drivers were what did it -- thanks jsvor!  EXCEPT there's still 1 "unknown device" which I can find absolutely no info on; driver magician didn't recognize it. But things seem to be running fine, so...i dunno! Guess I'll just leave it be for now.
For that one last "unkown device" try reinstalling your chipset drivers.
Have you tried uninstalling the unknown device and have windows detect it again?
I am having the same problem. Still have the unknown device. I'm not willing to simply give up on it though. Any suggestions?
You need to open a question.
No one will see it here.
