Suggest a USB UPS for Synology Diskstation
Dear Experts,
I need to connect USB UPS to Synology Diskstation 1513 +. Please suggest a model. Also attaching the log file from the Windows 2003 server which is having a drive presented through Disk station. When ever the power goes abnormally, all the files which are shared from that presented driver getting corrupted. Actually this never happened before in our environment because we have 2-3 similar disk station and when the power goes, the event viewer never gives any error.
Regards.

We use APC UPS's with the Business version of Powerchute software that shuts Windows down gracefully when the battery power reaches a certain level (Normally we set this at 50%).
PowerChute software comes free as a download from APC. You need to get the proper model UPS for it to work.
If you purchase one of the models that has the slot in the back to accept the communications card, that card has a network connection on it. You plug it into your network and it sends the appropriate signal to each Pc or server running Powerchute and then they shut down with no human intervention.
We use it for all our servers and it has kicked in a few times in the very early morning when there were power failures and we were not in the office.
Here is a link to the card

HI TG-TIS,
Actually there is no module in the synology where we can install this type of card. The only option is to go for USB UPS.

We have used Tripplite UPS's with all the Synology units. I think almost all models have a USB connection option.
If you have the budget I would use the Smart Online models - full double conversion and true sine wave output and the option to extend runtime if you need it.

Or if you need it cheap the Omni line interactive units which are around 1/3 the price. We run several DS412+ with these in portable rigs - but use he Smart Online models normally.

The card that TG-TIS goes into the UPS not the NAS. It lets you connect the UPS to a network directly so you can signal multiple servers and other equipment to shutdown as well as manage the UPS via network.

This is supported by Synology NAS.
You can also 'share' a USB connected UPS between multiple Synology NAS. It connects to one NAS and the others connect to the first NAS for the shutdown triggering. This is handy as the addon cards are fairly expensive when using smaller UPS models where the card is around half the cost of the actual UPS.

Hi kode99, thanks for explain what that card provides. It sounds like the author is looking for a USB connection rather then a network connection. The network connection setup is far more advanced and can provide shutdown functionality to multiple devices at one time. the USB connection only provides shutdown functionality to one device.
Normally the USB based shutdown id intended for a single unit like in a home or very small office.

I forgot to mention that the shutdown process through USB UPS should be clean shutdown. I am looking for smart USB UPS.
