Connecting US robotics Modem to Adtran router
Hey gurus,
I am trying to connect an US Robotics Modem V.92 to an Adtran Router so that I can dialinto it .
The following I have done
a) Connected the Router to the laptop using a serial cable first to see I can get into the router that way and Yes , I can enter
b) I am not sure if the procedure given by Lrmoore here

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20024370/Configure-modem-on-AUX-port-for-Cisco-router.html
is valid for my case or not and If yes , I have done that though I have questions in that
c) Connected the Serial cable from Modem to Router.
Using Hyperterminal , I tried to dial and after getting response from Modem , I am getting "gibberish" in the screen so obviously problem somewhere.
In Hyperterminal , I have selected the following properties
9600
no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control
I doubt my step 2 .. Any suggestions appreciated.

>> but did you set the modem appropriately - hard set to 9600 with local echo off
Is this done as part of the above step by step procedure ?
I was stuck at this pt
7. Enter this command string exactly:
ATE0F1Q1&I0&H0&K0&A0&B1&N6 &C1&D0&W0
When I typed the above command and pressed ENTER , nothing happened ?
Also , should I be using a regular serial cable to connect modem to router or a null-modem cable ?

lrmoore,
OK after I type in this
ATE0F1Q1&I0&H0&K0&A0&B1&N6 &C1&D0&W0
I press Enter and nothing happens. OK.
Now I cannot type anything . I tried to type ATI4 and it doesnot get typed.
Before I started hyperterminal , I set the speed as 9600.. Should I set at 2400 and try

lrmoore,
oh .. where did you go.. been waiting for you..
anyway , i continued with Step 9..
9. Now turn the modem off. Set DIP switches 1, 4 and 8 down, all others up (put 3 up, bring 4 down).

10. Turn the modem back on, type ATI4 again to verify that the configuration has remained correct.

12. Plug the RJ-45 cable into the console port of the router.
>> Did you mean plug the RJ-11 to the modem .. I connected RJ 11 to the modem and then another phone line to my laptop's modem and opened hyperterminal to dial.
now after getting the squealing noise from modem and waiting for more than 30 secs (kept in mind "Be patient young Jedi")
there is nothing on the screen (no gibberish , nothing) ..

Ja, step #12 - for Adtran, connect DB-9 console connection on back of Adtran to 25-pin Modem port
I don't have 2nd phone line here to test against an Adtran router....
Hyperterm setting may have to change to Hardware flow control vs no flow control

ok i am going to attempt ur steps another time to see what happens .. will post back shortly

OK . i did all the procedure again and i donot get anything on screen
i had to give hardware flow control under "flow control" but still modem settings look fine even after step 10 but not sure what could be the issue.
i might have to test this cable as i have never used this and that could be the simple issue
if you have any other suggestions , do let me know
thanks

It could be the modem cable you are using.
Do you have 9-pin <--> 25-pin Modem cable
or 9-pin<->25-Pin Adapter <->25-pinF <-->25-pinM Modem cable
Or some other combination? Are you sure it isn't a null modem cable?

i am not sure if it is not a null modem cable. any easy way to figure that out. i know i had one more cable which said null modem but didnot use that ..
regarding the cable used , it is like 25 pin M <-----> 9 pin adapter <----> 9 pin M..I think i am right on this, not in office hence not sure.. but sure didnot use any 25 pin adapter

I hate having to use gender-changer adapters.. are you sure the 9-pin M-F adapter is not a null adapter?
Getting the right cable with no adapters is where I would focus my attention..

OK Lrmoore you are right and I would surely agree there could be something that might be wrong with cable.
I donot think i have that kind of a cable but would try without any adapters to see how it goes.
i think i have to buy one so it will take tomm afternoon before i can get back to you ..
thanks for the idea

lrmoore,
Not that I didnot trust you or anything like that my supervisor said when he had talked with an adtran support person sometime last year when we were working on this similar issue , adtran support said we have to use a "null modem cable"
Hence I emailed Adtran support and now they reply saying I had to use a null modem cable.
I shall try a null modem cable also tommorrow and see what happens.

Hope you are not upset or anything. Just was discussing with my supervisor and it struck to him about his talk with adtran.

It doesn't upset me one bit. The guide that I published in the link above is strictly for Cisco. I've never actually tried with the Adtran, so this will be a learning experience for both of us..
ASKER
Woohoo!!.. got it working in the first try using Null-modem .
Thanks to you for the initial setup and settings.
Adtran didnot recommend anything about doing configurations to the modem to start with so I am not sure at this moment if that is needed or not but doing your steps surely worked. Moreover, Adtran said the DIP switches 3,5 and 8 should be UP which actually doesnot work . I am getting gibberish with that setting. I had 1,4 and 8 down and it works .. So I assume inorder to have 3,5 and 8 up and to make it work there needs to be some other setting. Not worried about that anyway ..
I shall add some pts to the step by step instructions that you had got and will post here. Will be beneficial for both of us.

The following step by step guide has been prepared by Sunray_2003 (https://www.experts-exchange.com/M_1264091.html) adapting information from Lrmoore (https://www.experts-exchange.com/M_388333.html) .Original version can be found in this thread https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20024370/Configure-modem-on-AUX-port-for-Cisco-router.html.
The following procedure was used to connect an US Robotics V.92 modem to an Adtran Netvanta 3205 router.
To start with:
--------------
a) Testing if the router is fine connecting a serial cable between computer to the console port of the router
b) Testing the configuration of the Modem connecting to the computer
c) Overall connection (One end) Computer ( assuming it has in-built modem) <-------Telephone line 1 ---------> <------
Telephone line 2 -----> US Robotics <----- 25 pin M Null modem cable 9 pin M -----> Netvanta Router
For a):
-------
1. Connect a serial cable between the COM port of the computer to the console port of the router. Make sure both devices
turned ON.
2. Open Hyperterminal. Give a "test name" and select connect using "COM1" and click "OK".
Under "Port Settings" , give the following
Bits per second : 9600
Data bits : 8
Parity : None
Stop bits : 1
Flow control : NONE
Press OK
and now in blank screen , press "ENTER" and you should get "router>" or "<router_name>" if you had already configured the router.
For b):
-------
1. Connect the modem to your PC’s open COM port (COM1 in this example) using 25Pin M serial cable 9 Pin M. If you donot have Male ends on both ends , use a gender-adapter. Try not to use a gender adapter as much as possible.
2. Reset the modem to factory defaults. Set DIP Switch 7 to the down position and turn on the modem. Wait 10 seconds,
turn the modem off. (Out of the box, 3, 5, and 8 are down, all others are up).
3. Set Modem DIP Switches 1, 3 and 8 down, all others up. Turn the modem back on.
4. Open HyperTerminal session direct to COM1. Regarding configure settings , give the same as given in step #2 under a)
5. Type AT <return>. You should see “OK”.
6. Type ATI4 to view the current modem settings: (Here it is 'AT''EYE''4' not 'AT''ONE''4')

Now I need to buy Db 25 Male <----> RJ 45 cable to connect modem to CISCO router and check how that goes.
Do you buy these cables online in any website or you get in general stores. I can google around but thought you would know any specific website from which you order ..

Sorry Lrmoore. I found my own answer. I had issues with upgrading the firmware of Netvanta ..
The problem was to start with I had to delete one of the BIZ files to free up space.. So there was a primary image and a backup image file. So when I gave the command
boot system flash <new firmware name> , it didnot like it as I had deleted the backup image file.. So i had to say no-backup and continue..
Nice learning..

Your hyperterm connections appear to be correct, but did you set the modem appropriately - hard set to 9600 with local echo off?
Did you use the step-by-step procedure to setup the USR modem?
