The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

D-Link DI-524 - Setup Wizard page cannot be displayed

Tags: setup, 524, wizard
Hi Experts,

Bit of a change of topic from my previous questions here. I have a D-Link 524 router, working well to share my broadband connection but I havent managed to get it setup for a proper wireless network with file and printer sharing.

Its all plugged in ok, but when I go to the address http://192.168.0.1/ to start the setup wizard, I get this error on the webpage 'The page cannot be displayed'.

As I say, through no configuration is is sharing my broadband, just cant get the network going. One factor may be that my modem does not plug into the router. It plugs into my PC through USB and the router connects to the PC through ethernet. Could this be the problem?

TIA,

Robert

Just a thought. If it is working properly and you cannot connect it is possible the default IP address has been changed. Try going to a command prompt (DOS window) and entering
     ipconfig
See what it returns for default gateway. That will be the IP of the D-Link.

03.15.2006 at 06:02AM PST, ID: 16194104
Thanks Rob - Tried it. The IP address for the Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection is 192.168.50.1, with the same result. Ethernet adapter network bridge is http://192.168.0.1 with same result.

Under default gateway, no IP is given on either connection?

If the network adapter connected to the D-Link is 192.168.50.1 then the D-Link would need to be something like 192.168.50.x  rather than 192.168.0.1
Do you know why you have a Bridge configured? How many network adapters are there?

03.15.2006 at 07:56AM PST, ID: 16195223
I'm not sure. The 3 LAN/High Speed Connections are my bluetooth adapter, my ethernet controller and 1394 net adapter. I have removed them all from the bridge and now my broadband is not being routed. There is only 1 network card in my PC though.

Sorry Robert, I was confused so I looked back through the posts and I see "my modem does not plug into the router. It plugs into my PC through USB". I missed or forgot that.  Highlight the required network adapters and choose bridge to re-establish.

However you may need to "break" the bridge to access and configure the D-Link. Wile you have the bridges "disassembled" run IP config again, and see what the gateway is for the connected adapter. Then try and connect to that gateway. Bridges change the routing table and I don't know how they affect the gateway but that may well be the issue.

If your other users can connect with the current configuration it should be just a matter of configuring the wireless connection.  If you are having problems you could consider; disabling the bridge and setting up ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the USB/Internet connection, this will assign the Ethernet adapter an address of 192.168.0.1, so you first need to change the D-Link's LAN interface to something else like 192.168.0.254. Then connect the computer's Ethernet cable to one of the D-Link's LAN ports (ignore the WAN port and configuration), disable DHCP on the D-Link, and configure the D-Link's wireless. This will make the computer the DHCP server and perform NAT (Network Address Translation) rather than the router. The router becomes a simple switch for cabled connections and a wireless access point.

Hi Rob,

Still no progress I am afraid :(

I removed the LAN connection and net adapater from the bridge, then in IP config the IP and subnet mask given are both 0.0.0.0 and no default gateway is given.

Sounds like no connection. Do you get a light on one of the D-Link LAN ports indicating a connection when you plug in the cable?

03.16.2006 at 03:27AM PST, ID: 16203678
I do yes. I think it must be my modem not plugging into my router. Maybe I just need a new modem?

Or perhaps router. If you re-enable the bridge can you connect? Problems are starting to mount up with the router.

03.16.2006 at 05:20AM PST, ID: 16204615
yeah have just been struggling with it now. although after re-bridging the connections and 10 minutes of fiddling about it is sending the connection again and i am online on my laptop.

ipconfig now back to giving IP of 192.168.0.1 for ethernet adapter network bridge.

quickly removed LAN connection from bridge, IP config gives IP 0.0.0.0 and not gateway again and connectivity is gone.

Have you tried connecting to the D-Link from the laptop? Run IPconfig from it and see what you get for a gateway and try to connect that way. Though making changes by means of a wireless connection, if that is how you are connected, is not recommended in case you loose the connection, you could at least confirm the LAN IP of the unit.

03.16.2006 at 05:36AM PST, ID: 16204727
tried it - and it works! ip 192.168.0.1, and also gives gateway 192.168.0.100 which the desktop doesnt give.

So a problem with the desktop network card or setup of it?

03.16.2006 at 05:37AM PST, ID: 16204731
(192.168.0.1 on the laptop works for the setup wizard).

03.16.2006 at 05:40AM PST, ID: 16204750

Rank: Wizard

I'm not sure ho, but I think the problem has to do with the routing with the bridge.
Can you connect to the D-Link with a cable from the laptop and configure that way? If so, it should resolve your problem.

03.16.2006 at 05:49AM PST, ID: 16204817
sure I will try that. But wont it mean that my laptop is the server then? Printer and ADSL are on desktop. or will i be able to configure on laptop then simply attach to desktop? will try now anyway. thanks

Rank: Wizard

Yes, don't change the network configuration, just use the laptop to access the D-Link on a temporary basis, and make configuration changes, then switch back to your initial hardware set-up. I am assuming this will resolve your initial problem of not being able to access the D-Link to configure your wireless and such.
Accepted Solution

thanks - have done that and configured it! still doesnt work for file sharing and printer sharing though. all setup on each machine and using adsl, but it doesnt find the other in my network places. will play with firewall settings!

Thanks for the points Robert.
If you have it set up with the USB modem connected to the computer and the Ethernet connection connected to the D-Link's WAN port you will be able to connect to the Internet as all requests by the other PC's are outgoing. However, if you plan to share files you need "bi-directional" and the D-Link is set up as a firewall to prevent that. The 2 PC's are 'on opposite sides' of the router. You could configure it to allow incoming connections for file and print sharing (probably TCP ports 139 & 445 and UDP 137 and 138) but that is a pain and you may be exposing yourself to outsiders through wireless connections. As mentioned above, I would convert it to a wireless access point and use ICS. This would put all devices 'on the same side' of the router.

from above: "If you are having problems you could consider; disabling the bridge and setting up ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the USB/Internet connection, this will assign the Ethernet adapter an address of 192.168.0.1, so you first need to change the D-Link's LAN interface to something else like 192.168.0.254. This will make the computer the DHCP server and perform NAT (Network Address Translation) rather than the router. The router becomes a simple switch for cabled connections and a wireless access point."
