The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

EPSON SCANNER Escndv.exe error message

Tags: epson, error
I have followed a previous Q&A session with a subscriber named lustt  concerning a scanner shutdown that is followed by the Escndv.exe error message.  I am a Windows XP user, and own an Epson Perfection 3170 photo scanner and my scanner has started doing the same thing.  The scanner is only 3 months old and was working fine when it suddenly had a problem scanning.  Upon rebooting I started receiving the same prompt:  Escndv.exe error message.  I uninstalled all of the Epson software and reinstalled it  on several different occasions, with the same results.  My connections are solid, and my USB cable operates just fine.  I downloaded the latest drivers from Epson for the 3170 model with no results.  I tried downloading patches and solutions thru NewSoft (which writes Epson software) to no avail.  Epson has been unresponsive with its automated assistance and had no solutions.  A web search for Escndv.exe revealed a large number of users from various countries -in various languages- with the similar problems but no solutions.  Operating the Smart Panel software works, but it cannot scan.  I believe I've isolated the problem which seemed to be the Escndv.exe file which doesn't execute. I found a file in the Escndv FOLDER named "Escfg" and when I double clicked it, I received a prompt saying "Information for scanners that support EPSON Scan settings is not installed.  Epson Scan Settings will close."  I have already reinstalled the software from the original disc several times, what is it that I am missing, and where do I get it?  I see that you had no solutions for the previous user with this question who reinstalled his whole operation system, which is not an option for a novice like me.

Yes, as you've said, this is a recurring problem with Epson scanners. Unfortunate, because otherwise they are generally pretty good scanners.

My first suggestion would be to use your system restore to roll back to a point before you started having problems. To do this, close any open programs, then go Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools ->System Restore. On the screen that pops up, click Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next. On the Select a Restore Point page, pick a date from the calendar that is before the time when you started having errors, then click Next. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, verify that the correct restore point is chosen, then click Next. The computer will shut down automatically and reboot. On reboot, you'll see the Restoration Complete page, just click OK and when the reboot is complete, try your scanner.

If that does not work, try this from Newsoft, the makers of the problematic software: http://www.newsoftinc.com/tech-Support/show-Faq.asp?uid=2690
Be SURE to follow step 4, this is very important to clear the old registry settings out of your computer. Also, if in the uninstall process you are asked if you wish to keep a shared file that does not appear to be used any more, click NO, you do not want to keep it.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
