Question

Error code -51 when copying files to a Samba share from a 10.3 Mac.

ALL of our 10.3 Macs (10.4 works fine.) return an error code "-51" when trying to copy files to a Samba share on a Solaris machine. (Windows shares work fine.).

Users are authenticating with a Windows 2003 domain.
We are currently using Samba 3.0.24.
The error only occurs when writing to the share, we are able to read just fine.

The only solution we have been able to come up with is to upgrade to 10.4 but we have entire labs that would need to be upgraded which would be very expensive.

Hi ucstechinfo,

Can you provide the samba logs from your solaris server when you attempt to write into the samba share?
That will probably be a great reference to start off.

I've seen this error before with people using Cisco VPN clients, but not with Samba.  One thing you could try is connecting to your Solaris SMB share using the cifs://servername method.  I used to get errors transferring large files over 2GB in size from a Mac to a Windows/Linux server using the smb:// method.  cifs, while a little slower, worked regardless of filesizes without problems.  I would try this, but do also post any of the messages from your Samba log files from the Solaris server.

Finally just moved to 10.4 and stopped worrying about it.  Macs.....meh.
