The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

BartPE not loading RAID drivers

Tags: bartpe, raid, drivers
I am trying to resurrect a corrupt Windows 2003 installation on a Dell PowerEdge 2900. After trying some other options, I decided creating a bootable system CD with Bart PEBuilder was my best bet. But I can't get the RAID drivers to load successfully. Whether I include them in the CD itself, or use F6 to load them from a diskette, the Bart boot comes back with "The file percsas.sys couild not be found."

I'm using the most recent drivers from Dell (for PERC 5/i). I'm sure it must be an error in one of the .INF files.  But I can't figure it out, even though I've read through dozens of forums and websites. I'm a newbie as far as setting up .INF files is concerned.

This is an urgent problem, so I'm throwing bunches of points at it.

Thanks in advance!

Did you build bartpe CD from Server 2003 files or WinXP?  Per the link below, percsas.sys is a driver only for W2K3.  I have not had issue loading drivers w/ bartpe when using F6 before.

UBCD4Win is built on bartpe and contains a large number of drivers by default; maybe you can try that as well?

Here's a how-to guide from one of the BartPE message boards on adding hard drive drivers, obviously, change the driver names to the ones you are using:

My HP Pavilion DV9200T Series notebook has the "Intel(R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH7M)", which is not detected by BartPE in the latest version.
I have finally had success getting it working and have streamlined the additions that BartPE requires for this device to function properly and have my hard drives detected by BartPE.

This procedure can be generalized for other SATA drivers*

I only have to add (1) file to BartPE in the correct directory after you have discovered the Hardware ID for your Sata Controller and add the entrys below to TXTSETUP.SIF. *Note: Make sure you use the correct info for your Hardware ID. These entry(ies) associate drivers with the PCI device Id(s) detected on the machine. How do you know which device ID info to use? Open the TXTSETUP.OEM file you extracted with the other files from your original driver package download and look for the device ID for your machine. If you don't know the device ID for your machine, go to Device Mgr and then go to Properties for the RAID or AHCI controller on your system; look in Details tab.

IT APPEARS THE DRIVER FILE "IASTOR.SYS" MUST BE IN ALL CAPS FOR IT TO WORK PROPERLY!
... and it also must be placed inside a folder named SCSIAdapter located within the drivers folder on BartPE.
If you don't do this, it BartPE will not find the file at boot.

IASTOR.SYS

In the \I386 folder inside the mini-PE ISO, you need to extract and edit TXTSETUP.SIF to include the information below and to remove erroneous information that may be incorrectly pointing to the wrong files for your controller.
I wasn't doing this and couldn't figure out what was hanging me up. You will also need to create the SCSIAdapter folder here: /I386/SYSTEM32/DRIVERS/SCSIAdapter

----------- Updated TXTSETUP.SIF Below -----------

[SourceDisksFiles]
IASTOR.SYS=1,,,,,,3_,4,1,,,1,4

[HardwareIdsDatabase]
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27C5&CC_0106 = "iaStor"

[SCSI.Load]
iaStor=IASTOR.SYS,4

[SCSI]
iaStor = "Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 27DF"

----------- Updated TXTSETUP.SIF Above ----------

Thanks for the suggestions!  I did see the second one by aleinss in my searches, but it didn't solve the problem. However, I made the CD with Win XP instead of Win 2003, as b0fh suggested. I will try that today and get back to you.  Thanks again!

Got it! Just something as silly as using Win3K to create the CD. Should have thought of that, but late nights and old brain cells...

Thanks bunches! I'm well on my way to recovering my Windows partition.
