Oh yeah, pushing the button does nothing except turn the light on or off. "ok, I replaced the disk drive - I don't need this server blinking any more....".

Browse All TopicsI have an HP ProLiant DL380 G5 Server. On the front of the server there is a button labeled UID. Through HP's System Management Homepage I am able to turn the light on or off. When it is on the light is blue. What is the point of this button/light? What happens if I push the button?

The UID light's purpose is to "locate" the server.
Say that you have a rack full of these-- oh,I don't know-- 25 or 30 of these like we have in our data center.
You have one node that you have to shut down toreplace a disk drive. By enabling the light, it helps you know which one to pull out of the rack, so you don't accidently ripthe power cord out of the wrong one, for example....
