The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Can you clone a hard drive to a USB hard drive with Ghost 2003?

Asked by gs-rho in Computer Servers, Miscellaneous Hardware, Norton Ghost Backup Software

Hi,
We're trying to clone a server drive before making some experimental changes. (One could make the changes on a lab systerm, but it's hard and expensive to get it quite the same.) We find that many servers that have RAID cards with their own BIOS allows you to clone them to a hard drive with Ghost 2003. This is very handy. But some servers don't have any ports on the board, (just SCSI backplanes, etc.) so all that is left is a USB solution... either a USB hard drive or a USB-adapter-connected hard drive (unless you're going to install an expensive extra SCSI/SAS hard drive). Ghost 2003 claims to have USB drivers but we have never been able to find a piece of USB hardware that actually works with them...
...here's how I see possible solutions...

- has anyone found a USB drive or solution that actually works with Ghost 2003 drivers?
- any tried getting around the above, for ghosting/cloning, by installing an extra basic RAID card with SATA/PATA ports? ...it would have to be one with its own BIOS so it could be detected at POST and used in Ghost. Any brand names?
- changes to the drivers/Ghost program?
Or something else?
Any ideas out there?Start Free Trial
