What OS is on the local Pc?
Do you have a domain?

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2007-12-30 at 05:35:43ID: 20550743

windows xp sp3 on the local,
yes I do have a domain, but I'm not sure it's set up yet on the server.
I'm a songwriter and have just been using the server as a seedbox for long distant writing engagements, via torrent files.

>>windows xp sp3

SP3 is not out yet m8 - so Ill assume we are on SP2

OK have you joined the XP machine to the domain -? if not do that first

joining a domain
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/wxpjoind.html

Then log onto the xp machine with a DOMAIN logon account (cheance the login box to the domainname on the xp machine)

to create a doimain account, on the server start > run > dsa.msc {enter} > expand domainname > expand users> new User

OK now your logged onto the domnain with a domain user account either create a new folder on the XP box or use an existing one > right click > sharing and security > give it a sharename > set share permissiond to everyone full control.

Write down the sharename of the folder.
find out the name of the xp machine -start > run > cmd > echo %computername% {enter}

Go to the server
Start > run > cmd {enter}
at command line issue the following command
net use x: \\xp_computername\sharename /y

Open mycomputer on the server > open the X drive - theres the contents of your folder :)

>>yes I do have a domain, but I'm not sure it's set up yet on the server.

if you run start > run > dsa.msc {enter} and it fails then you havnt set it up properly
if thats the case Start > run > dcpromo {enter}
follow the onscreen prompts

Ok my xp box doesn't see my domain, which is jodyfaison.com, I guess. As per the link, I'm first renaming my workgroup, the exact same name as the domain-  jodyfaison.com

When I check the properties on the win server 03, it shows I have a workgroup, but no domain name. Maybe that's why I can't get my xp box to see the domain.

by: PeteLongPosted on 2007-12-30 at 07:10:26ID: 20550971

OK on the server run dcpromo as above :) call the domain jodyfaison.com

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2007-12-30 at 07:55:23ID: 20551135

man, I'm increasing the points on this one...haha
Ok I'm getting DNS Registration errors. It says the wizard (of dcpromo) is encountering errors trying to determine if the DNS server supports dynamic updates. My given options are-  1: I have corrected the problem, perform test again. 2: install/configure DNS server on this machine  3: correct later manually.

Here is one advice too:
Try if you can ping to your server from your destop:
"ping your_server_name" ->if this fails you have DNS or network problem!
"ping your_server_ip" ->If this fails tou have network problem!
If those go OK, you can use net command
"Net use x: \\your_server_name.jodyfaison.com\c$ /user:administrator@jodyfaison.com" (if you know administrator password).
OR use Ip-address of your sever
"Net use x: \\192.§68.1.10\c$ /user:administrator" (i´m questing you ip-address, you¨ll have to know the real one)

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2007-12-30 at 10:27:35ID: 20551619

I guess I have a network problem, as the ping to the server name is not working. By server name, I'm just using the computer name, right? When I ping with the server/pc name on the the server the ping does work.
The ip ping works from my pc.
I leased this server but have done nothing to set it up. Maybe I need to set up the DNS, though a network op friend of mine said that he was hosting the name. Is that the same thing?

by: PeteLongPosted on 2007-12-31 at 03:23:54ID: 20554164

>>Ok I'm getting DNS Registration errors. It says the wizard (of dcpromo

OK start > Run > appwiz.cpl > add/remove windows componants > networking componants > remove DNS

run dcpromo again and it will detect its not there - reinstall it and configure it - note during dcpromo it will look like its errored again but read the small print on the page and there will be a "Install and configure it for me" option :)

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2007-12-31 at 05:09:01ID: 20554451

ok, I've got a new active directory service now. I guess I go back to the original instructions?

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2007-12-31 at 06:45:42ID: 20555014

I can't get my xp box to connect to the domain jodyfaison.com. It says that maybe the domain is not registered with DNS.

by: TapioLPosted on 2007-12-31 at 07:32:02ID: 20555381

Try this one also!
Add line to your hosts file (in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc)
ip_of_your_server     server_name
# exsample of hosts -file:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.jodyfaison.com          # source server

and add line to yout lmhosts file (in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc)
ip_of_your_server     server_name    #PRE #DOM:network_name
# exsample of lmhosts -file:
#
# 102.54.94.97     rhino         #PRE #DOM:jodyfaison.com  #PDC

After this reboot your computer. -> Now you shoud be able to use net view command.
in command propt:
Net view \\server_name
You should now see what directories are shared if any
Map network drive with net use command.

And of course ask from your server supplier can you even connect as AD to the leased server or is it only file server./appilication server.

Im guessing your DNS on the XP Client is set wrong

start > run > ncpa.cpl {enter}
right click local area connection > properties
Select TCP/IP > properties
Under the DNS entry enter the IP address of the 2003 server - then try and join the domain :)

If you realy need only to access to one folder in your leased server!
Let´s try it easy!
Create folder in your server! Share the folder so that everybody can access it!
Map shared folder with net use
#example
net use x: \\server_ip\sharedname
 Does this work?
If you want to resolve that DNS error ,do this! (Article ID: 174419 from microsoft)

1.Launch the DNS MMC (Microsoft Management Console). Under view, change from standard view to advanced.
2.Highlight Reverse Lookup Zones, right click and select new zone.
3.Select Zone Type of Active Directory Integrated or Standard Primary, click next.
4.Select the option for the "Reverse lookup zone name". Type in the name of the reverse lookup zone, (for example, 64-26.100.168.192.in-addr.arpa) for the subnetted class C address. Be sure to use the naming convention supplied by the administrator of the parent domain, click next.
5.If you selected standard primary, you can either create a new zone file or if there is an existing zone file, you can place it in the %systemroot%\winnt\system32\dns directory and the server will read it from that directory.
6.Manually add your PTR (pointer records) as you would any reverse lookup zone.

For example:
65 PTR host65.msn.com

You may have to configure the child DNS server(s), which are hosting the delegated zone, to forward to the parent DNS servers. This enables the child DNS servers to resolve records in the zones hosted by the parent DNS servers.

Well it let me use the net use command to share a folder. I had to take off the x, and used the command line  net use \\72.232.97.74\downloads  and it seemed to work.
But I'm not sure now why I'm doing that? It showed up in the Network of the server, but I couldn't see in on my desktop. So I tried to log into the domain on my local desktop, which didn't work- says my computer is not recognized by the domain.

I'll get to work on these other steps for resolving the DNS error.

Thank you so much for your patience with this one!

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2008-01-02 at 11:56:13ID: 20567256

I'm not sure how to name the reverse lookup zone....
I think I'm class A, as my ip is 72.232.97.74   and where would I find my pointer records?

When I try and use the net use with any device in get error 67.

??

Am I in over my head?

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2008-01-02 at 13:30:50ID: 20568233

may have made it to the configuring of the child DNS server, now I'm stuck again

by: TapioLPosted on 2008-01-03 at 09:14:48ID: 20574502

Let´s still try with "easy way"
In net use command x means the drive letter witch you can use and see in windows explorer!
So make sure that you don´t have any drives in that drive letter what you are using!

by: TapioLPosted on 2008-01-03 at 09:38:09ID: 20574736

I just noticed something!
Is the server in some where else than your home? In local network or outside of your local network?
If the server is outside you have to have VPN connectio to the server before you can connect your home computer to your domain, so i think that you don´t need this or am i right`?
Maybe it´s easier if you use Remote Desktop.

Start your remote desktop
In Local Resources set local drived to connect
Connect to your server
You shoud now see your local drives in windows explorer(in remote desktop)
Does this help?

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2008-01-03 at 10:05:05ID: 31417917

Thank you yes this is exactly what I was looking for!!!

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2008-01-03 at 10:07:12ID: 20574972

one last thing, though- do you think it's faster coping from drive to drive, now that we have them available in remote desktop or using FTP or PC Anywhere?  (should I post this as another question with points?)

by: TapioLPosted on 2008-01-04 at 05:36:09ID: 20581969

In my opinion FTP is the best way, but in this case just zip your files and copy them to your hard-drive!
