It's time to upgrade my terminal server which was not the perfect build due to some bad information I received at the time from a now defunct computer company. This server will be servering no more than 10 simultanious users, the current usual load is around 5-7. I'm thinking I'd like to build with a standard asus motherboard (not a server board). I just built a system with a p5e motherboard that I was fond of.
Here's roughly the setup I'd like:
Asus mobo w/ as many sata ports as possible and raid 5 support
core 2 3ghz 1333
8gb 1066
5 x 250gb sataII (3 in raid 5, 2 in raid 1)
simple video card with server drivers, don't like onboard
Thats roughly what I'm after, I just built a similar system but with only 4 gb of ram. It's running xp pro though. I'm thinking server 2008 64bit. I currently am running on an amd x2 4400 and the processor isn't working too hard. I have a poor choice of motherboard in the system though and also not enough ram and a hd bottleneck. The hd setup was more for a file server setup and then we turned this into more of a terminal server. Since I'm not using most of my cpu capacity right now, I figure it'd make more sense to go with a core 2 at a higher clock than a slower core 2 quad with a lower clock. Unless I'm way off and I'll benefit more from a quad. Any help and questions welcome. I'd like to build smarter than last time. Also, I've got someone that wants to buy my current terminal server and I could get good money for it within the next few weeks. The problem is that server 2008 isn't out yet and I don't have a backup server for people to run on. Is it possible to use the 2008 rc1? Is it stable enough that I can use it until 2008 releases?
Thanks!
