The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

How do I reset an IBM RSA II to factory defaults

Tags: IBM, Remote Supervisor Adapter II, 13N0832 or 39M4948, RSAII
I have several IBM RSAII cards that are used for out-of-band management of IBM xSeries servers.  We need to reset these cards to factory defaults.  IBM has a bootable diskette we can use to reset them, but the existing card firmware is for an xSeries server we currently don't have available.  If we put the card in to another xSeries server, the floppy boots and says "no devices found" - which means it can't talk to the card due t the firmware being for another server type.  I read where there was a reset button dance you could do on some IBM management modules (blade center) that we tried (5-5-10) with no luck.  We also tried the IBM MPCLI utility with the same results.

Any thoughts or magic to reset these cards?

You can download ASU from ibm site and reset the card with the following instruction on page 42 of 68
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/systems/support/system_x_pdf/43w7833.pdf

The third one from the bottom of this page is the utility to download:
https://www-304.ibm.com/jct01004c/systems/support/supportsite.wss/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-55021&brandind=5000008

Correction:
The third one from the bottom of the link to dowload not the bottom of the page. You wand to look for the .exe file and if you want you can also download the readme file on the second link as well:

One thing I should mention is that I have a stack of these RSAII cards and I am trying to default them so we can reuse them.  The previous user made them all static IP and disabled DHCP.  I am using an x345 (lab server) to attempt to restore these cards.  I have no way of knowing what server thay came out of and/or the IP, username, password.

I did try ASU (DOS version) previously it claimed it could not find the card.  I believe the cards have the wrong platform firmware and while there is a way to update the firmware and change the platform, I need to get in first!  I also made sure I patched ASU for the actual server the RSA is installed on (x345) - no luck.

We cannot upgrade the firmware as the host server does not see it as a valid RSA - or if we attempt to upgrade via the web, we cannot access it due to not being able to reset it to defaults.

Just need to reset the card by pitching the hole. Check page 12 on this guide to reset your card:
http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/i/advantages/integratedserver/pdf/ixa_pdguide.pdf

On the RSA II cards, the reset button only does a processor reset (restart) but does not default the settings to factory (USERID, PASSW0RD).  I did see this document and the IXA is a slightly different animal than the RSA II or RSA II Slimline.

OK. Here are two other ways to reset password:
1)Get in your bios --> Configuration utility --> Advanced Setup --> RSA II setting --> Restore RSA II to defaults...
Check this semulation:
http://www-304.ibm.com/jct01004c/systems/support/reflib/simulators/xseries/x260/main.html

2) Flashing bios
Dowload Bios flask disket for RSA II:
https://www-304.ibm.com/jct01004c/systems/support/supportsite.wss/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-64967&brandind=5000008
Then follow this instruction to flash it on your card:
http://www-304.ibm.com/jct01004c/systems/support/supportsite.wss/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-42044&brandind=5000008

Inkevin - I am going to try something your last post made me think of - the x345's we use to configure our RSA cards do not have the "Configure RSA" option in BIOS (they are configured only by floppy) - so I will see if I can find a slightly newer xSeries server that does have that option and use it to reset all of our cards... I'll try one out and mark this as Accepted.  Thanks!
