Convert Boot drive to Hardware Raid

i have a Server 2003 machine with 1 single hard drive that i want to convert over to RAID1 Using the onboard ADAPTEC RAID controller, Currently the BIOS SATA controller is set to "compattible" . When i enable the onboard RAID the os fails to load shortly after boot. I tried to install the raid drivers wile the OS is up and running then shut down and enable RAID to no avail. How can i make this conversion without re-installing the OS?
