HP Smart Array 5302-128 Controller hard drive boot problems after upgrade

Hello,

I am performing an in-place upgrade of Windows 2000 Server to Windows 2003 Server on an HP Proliant ML350G3 with a Smart Array 5302-128 controller.

All goes well until the final reboot. It starts displaying the Windows 2003 logo, jumps into Windows and the "Windows is starting up" message appears. All looks good but that's as far as it goes. The hard drive activity indicator lights are all on and nothing else happens. It eventually (15-20 minutes) gets to "Prepapring network connections" but then that takes for ever. And the hard drive indicator lights stay on. The hard drives do not seem to be doing anything.

I can get into safe mode. I have tried to upgrade the controller driver in safe mode but that makes no difference. At one point I downgraded the driver to an unsigned 2000 driver and it booted but then locked up when I tried to upgrade to SP2. So I think it is a driver issue and not a card issue.
