The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Stop Error 0x0000007B Inaccessible Boot Device on SBS 2000 after Power failure

Tags: Stop Error 0x0000007B Inaccessible Boot Device on SBS 2000
This client had a power failure over the weekend and their Dell PowerEdge 2500 with SBS 2000 will not boot now.  It starts to boot and gets about half way through the Windows 2000 status window and then blue screen Stop Error 0x0000007B Inaccessible Boot Device.  I ran a surface scan on the disk from the built-in utilities and came up clean. I am now trying to figure out how I can run a chkdsk on it. Server has no CD but has a Floppy drive.  It appears that this server was originally set up with 2 Seagate SCSI 36g drive in Raid 1.  They tell me that they have been getting Container has missing members errors during boot for about a year.  I believe one of the drive is probably dead.

Agree chkdsk is probably your best bet. Can you not add a CD "hanging off the side" for a while? CHKDSK may need to run a couple of times. It's available from the command line repair section of the Windows install disk.

You can get Windows 2000 boot disks from here
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

then you could boot from them into recovery and try running fixboot and fixmbr commands..

Do you have any way of installing a CD Drive ? If so this opens up a lot more options otherwise your pretty limited to what can be done here.

If you can install a CD drive in there I would get the seatools diagnostic

"Container has missing members errors during boot for about a year" this isn't good. In the raid bios(ctrl+a) what is the status of the raid array? Possible 1 hdd has been offline for about a year and the power failure may have kicked the other off.

Can I use the set of 4 floppy disks that you can get if you run makeboot.exe from a Windows 2000 Pro CD?
Could I use a USB CD Rom Drive?

Not all of the "boot media" are compatible with all O/S's, and some may not see the hardware RAID array (broken  or not), perhaps someone else know in this case, but you can certainly try a USB/CD. I find some systems don't always see them at boot. I have had good luck with the Dell USB ones on numerous systems.

I am not getting anywhere.  I can not get in anywhere to run chkdsk.  Safe Mode gives blue screen error too.  I tried a windows 2000 set of floppies but, I think, without the drivers for the SCSI raid controller it says it can not find any drives.  I Have run all the diagnostic utilities buil-in to the Dell Server and the Computer and drive passes all confidence tests, so it seems to make sense that it would be some kind of coruption problem.  Normally with a single SATA or PATA drive I would just pull the drive and run chkdsk from my bench computer.  Any suggestions.  I tried a USB CD ROM but could not get it to boot from CD, but I would think that I would have the same problems.  HELP!!

Any chance you can open it up and add an IDE CDrom

03.04.2008 at 01:44PM PST, ID: 21045429
I just opened it up and there are no IDE ports that I can find.  Is that Possible?  Looking at the diagram on the cover, everthing is SCSI and 1 floppy.

03.04.2008 at 01:52PM PST, ID: 21045497
The 2500 will use an ide cdrom. The cdrom will connect to the same interposer board that the floppy drive is connected to, then the interposer board uses a special cable and port on the motherboard.

It is possible to connect a SCSI CDrom, but as jamietoner has referenced, almost all board have at least 1 IDE connector on the motherboard.

I will check it out again this afternoon,  If I can get a CD Drive to work, what is it that you suggest that I do from there?

03.05.2008 at 05:03AM PST, ID: 21049858

Rank: Sage

The Windows O/S install disk has more drivers, and will usually recognize common raid hardware. If so you can then boot from the CD and do a "repair", from the command line. This will allow you to run chkdsk. If you can do so I would run it at least twice, and reboot in between.
Should this fail you could try a repair install.

As always-if possible back up any data first.

If you can get a CD Drive hooked up I would highly recommend running the Seatools diagnostic I listed above because if the drive is no good your going to waste your time with repairing windows or running checkdisk. If the seagate test fails the drives are shot.

Update
Thanks again for all your help.  Well I feel like a complete idiot.  I am back at the server today and I took a second look at it and with my glasses on now, I see that it does have a CD drive.  It is a combo Floppy/CD drive.  Being all black, it blended in with the rest of the case and I did not see it.  Anyway,  I ran all the tests on the remaining/ working drive and it seems to be just fine.  I then downloaded the Adaptec PERC 3/DI drivers to a floppy disk and booted the server to the SBS 2000 CD and hit F6 to give it the SCSI Raid drivers.  I was then able to boot to the recovery console and I am now run a CHKDSK /R.  I am keeping my fingers crossed and will get back to you.  Thanks Again for all you help.

Sounds like some progress. Let us know how you make out.

Yes, Yes, Yes...  It worked.  I ran chkdsk twice and then rebooted and everything is just fine.  I will close out this question and start another one to ask about replacing the drives.  One mirrored drive is down and I have to assume the second will go soon.

Thank you so much for all your help and support.
