The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

SSH Tunnel Problem Mac to PC

Asked by thokkane in Computer Servers, Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger)

I am trying to establish SSH tunneling for a vnc connection. I have set up a SSH server on my windows xp pro pc. I can ssh and connect to it from my mac (Tiger 10.4.10), however i cant get the tunneling working. The vnc server is listening for connections on port 5901 on the same pc as the SSH server is on. If i open port 5901 on my router i can connect straight to the pc from my mac, however the goal is to get tunneling working. It seems the binding isn't working properly. The ssh command i'm trying to use to get tunneling to work is

ssh -N -L 5900:192.168.0.101:5901 username@pc.host.ip

the following connects to the SSH server and requests for a password which i input correctly and log in. The connection stays open with the -N parameter. This doesn't however, let me connect with my mac VNC client (Chicken of the VNC) to the VNC server on the pc. The mac VNC viewer setting seem to be correct too. Host: pc.host.ip. Display: 0.

As mentioned before it works if i open up port 5901 on my router and then connect with the VNC viewer. The SSH port 22 has been forwarded properly to the pc. Also i have tried making the tunnel and while the tunnel being opened i opened the VNC port 5901 on the router and after opening the port the vnc viewer displays the image. Most likely the problem is in the command or some kind of port binding problem. Start Free Trial
