The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Poweredge 2650 is not booting, "No boot device available" error ?

Asked by mywebsites in Computer Servers, Computer Motherboards, Computer Hard Drives

I seem to have had a fatal powercut before I have had a chance to purchase a UPS for my PE2650.

The following details are courtesy of the DRAC configuration.

System ID      0121h
System Model      PowerEdge 2650
BIOS Version      A21

Boot Path Analysis reads as follows:
Severity             POST Code             Description
       81             Processor initialization and reset

       82             Chipset initialization

       83             Memory sub-system configuration

       84             Shadow the BIOS

       85             Non-volatile storage test

PE2650 has PERC 3/Di Controller, a RAID key and RAID memory, 4 x 36gb SCSI HDDs setup in 2 RAID 1 arrays.  Before it failed it was running ESX server

The Dell PERC configuration now DOES NOT appear at the POST:

"Dell PowerEdge Expandable RAID Controller , BIOS VX.X [Build XXXX]
(c) 1998-2000 Adaptec, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
<<< Press <CTRL>+<A> for Configuration Utility!  >>>"

When I press the system identification button, I get the following message on the Status LCD screen:

"LOG DISABLE SBE"

- Multiple single-bit errors on a single memory module.

It is DIMM A Bank 1 that is at fault according to DRAC.
The BIOS confirms that I have 3.5gb in 2x256 2x512 2x1gb which is correct.
Taking out the faulty module still does not prevent the lack of PERC 3/DI in the POST.

When the POST has completed its job, I get the following:

"No boot device available strike F1 to retry boot f2 for setup utility."

When I go into the BIOS I can see all 4 available drives, suggesting to me that the backplane is functioning correctly.

I have resat the RAID key and DIMM.  Resat all the other DIMMS.
The only thing I havent checked is the RAID battery, is that likely to cause these errors ?

Can you advise where I need to investigate and where I may need a replacement: i.e. new 1x5 backplane, new RAID memory, new RAID key, buying a new controller.
I am wondering whether it is really worth it, should I save my pennies on a newer/quieter server and transfer the drives.
If there is somewhere to get refurb DELL spares at a good price, let me know.

If I have missed anything, let me know.
