Question
New Exchange Server Spec
I am replacing an Exchange Server that runs Server 2003 R2 and Exchange 2003. This also incorporates a Backup drive using Symantec Backup Exec 12. The spec for existing server is HP ProLiant ML370 G3 with a HP SorageWorks Ultrium 448 SCSI Sequential Device.
Can you recommend the best server to run Server 2003, Exchange 2007 and Backup Exec 12 with a tape device? I believe this needs to be 64bit for Exchange 2007 to work. Is the exisitng Backup device still good enough to be transferred?

The ML370 has always been available in rackmount as well as tower configuration but maybe you're after something physically smaller, DL380 G5 in that case. You can either use 2 disks for the OS and transaction logs and 6 for the data, stripe everything accross all the disks or use 2 for the OS, 2 for logs and 4 for data. Again one quad core and 4 to 8GB of RAM will probably be enough. You could run a sizer such as http://msexchangeteam.com/
You'll need an external enclosure to put the tape drive in and a SCSI HBA in the server. enclosures at http://h18006.www1.hp.com/

If HP provided Windows 2003 64 bit drivers I would recommend a ML370 G3 with the same disk configuration and tape drive (I/O demands of 2007 are less than 2003 so current hardware is good if it performs well at the moment). Unfortunately they don't have 64 bit drivers so although it will probably work it's not supported so a new ML370 G5 with the same number of disks that you currently have will be fine. You can't avoid getting a quad core CPU and 4 or 8 GB of RAM nowadays since it's so cheap.
