Browse All TopicsHi,
I have worked for a consulting business for the past 8 years doing server installs but have recently moved to Adelaide, Australia and have started my own consult business.
I need help in purchasing hardware for a rather large client.
They currently have a dual xeon SBS 2003 server which is about 3 or so years old. They are growing rapidly and how have multiple sites and they are wanting a second server installed to run a high end database, plus a second server can serv as the dedicated VPN server + down the track, terminal services or citrix.
My problem is, I really have no buying power and the company I used to work for would normally buy this stuff. I can still purchase HP servers through one of their suppliers, namely Ingram Micro, however I really do find all the HP stuff confusing to quote!
What im after is:
1 x new server with 1 xeon CPU (with future upgrade to 2)
1 x windows server 2008 STD
1 x SQL server software with Reporting Services and Analysis Services
Does anyone know of anywhere in Australia I might be able to get quoted on this sort of stuff, and can anyone help me out in regards to licensing etc, EG sql + server licensing
thanks

If you're looking for a specific recommendation on a server, I'd highly recommend the HP DL380 rackmount brand. I have installed Exchange and database servers to run on these boxes and have been very impressed with the performance. The G5 model (the G6 has recently been released too) has support for up to 32GB RAM, 8 hard disks and two processors, so it is sufficiently equipped for high-performance applications.
For the database server I'd recommend the following:
HP DL380 G5 (most models have an Intel Xeon Quad Core as standard, upgradable to 2 CPUs if required)
RAM - AT LEAST 8GB, perhaps more depending on the size and demand on the database product being run
Hard Disks - RAID 1 for the system/page file array, RAID 10 for a separate array specifically storing the databases. As attractive as it may seem, do not put the database on a RAID 5 array if you are looking for performance.
Windows Server 2008 64-bit Edition (to address more than 4GB RAM)
Battery Backed Cache to improve Write efficiency for the database. You may also want to upgrade the default cache chip to 512MB; the standard build is normally 256MB.
As for your other server (VPN), how imminently will it be used as a Terminal Server? If it's not imminent, you could probably get away with the bare essentials for the time being, and upgrade the server later as required.
HP DL380 G5 with Quad Core Intel Xeon
Maybe 2GB RAM
Single RAID 1 array for installing the system to
You could later upgrade the RAM as you add users to the Terminal Server role, and add an additional CPU if you wish.
Let me know if you have any questions.

To be quite honest, thats what HP is for. I would recommend ProLiant DL300 series server and if you later want to add a separate server for VPN maybe you could go with a ProLiant DL100 series server.

Calling their sales reps should take care of all of the licensing issues for you. For SQL server licensing is generally licensed per CPU so it should be too difficult. I'm sure HP has an office for the australia region...http://welcome.hp
