have you tried getting the user to manually put the computer in offline mode when he in network Z? that would force the computer to look at the offline cache instead of trying to search for those files on the network.

My problem is like this . We have site X and Y .Site X and Y are connected through VPN. User Z is based in X but will go to Y once a while . User Z stores all his data in X site (file server).Ever since we activate the offline folder services in his laptop, he will have difficulties in opening any attachment if he is in Y site.It will take 1-2 minutes before he can open the attachment. It looks like the process is going back to X ,..before it start to open the attachment. Simple term, it looks like his profile is stored in X and anything he do, it will go to X before can do something when he is in Y site.
Nevertheless, this latency also occurs when he is working remotely but a lot shorter compare to when he is working at our branch office.

1. X subnet is 172.19.x.x and Y is 172.18.x.x.
2. If I disable the offline file , the user will not be able to open any WORD files. It says ...Normal.dotm cannot be found. Content.....
3.I can understand that this is happening to offline folders, but I couldn't see why it also happens when he tries to open an attachment inside an email . Assume he tries to open an attachment from Outlook , he will need 1-2 minutes before it starts to open. And if I disable the offline mode, he can't open it at all.

seems like when the user in network Y, his laptop is is still able to see the shares on X via the VPN, so might be trying to connect to it before timing out and then using the offline folders. what are the subnets like in both X and Y? are they both using the same DNS server?
