I doubt that it's the overall speed of your server, more likely a bad DVD burner, drive or cable.

I have tried slowing the speed of the burn with a little success (seemingly).
We have an old server on its last legs (using SATA drives), could it possibly be the slow speed of the server/network causing the issue? may it even be long filepath names? or dots in the folder names? Maybe all of the above?
I am going to be asked why this is happening and need to give them some answers even if it is for them to get a new server/faster network.

Usually I have seen this error message when the laser on the drive is dirty/going bad. It may be that you need to run a cleaning disk through the drive or possibly replace it.
I would think that with todays servers/writers you shouldnt really have to slow down the writing to have it work correctly. If you do end up replacing the drive I would go with something that has a large buffer when writing. It has been several years since I bought one but I was always very impressed with Plextor drives.
