Question

QLogic QLE2460 Loop Down

Asked by: agcsupport

I am having some issues getting one of my QLE2460 HBA to work.  My environment is as follows:

"      Two IBM X3650 (clustered)
"      Each 3650 has two QLE2460 HBAs with each HBA going to a separate McData 4500 fiber switch for redundancy
"      Zones configured on each switch that include the two HBAs and an IBM shark which is where the LUNS reside.

Issue:

"      Sansurfer sees both HBAs on each server but one on each server is showing   as Loop Down
"      Both HBAs that are showing as Loop Down are on the same McData switch
"      Both ports on the McData that the Loop Down  HBAs are on show port status as Inactive
"      I dont see any RDAC references in device manager on either of the 3650s

Not sure exactly where my issue resides switch, HBA, RDAC or how to troubleshoot. Any advice will be appreciated.

Set the HBAs topology  to Point-to-Point or Loop Preferred. They are connected to a switched fabric not in an Arbitrated Loop hence the need for Point-to-Point.

Both cards are set to 'Loop prefered otherwise point to point' The card that is working has its 'Actual Connection Mode' to Point to Point. I changed the non-functioning card to 'Point to Point only' 'Actual Connection Mode' shows 'Loop'

Check the port type on the 4500 - it should be G or E port. N port indicates a switched fabric or point-to-point connection. L port indicates a loop port. A G or E port will (should) auto-sense topology.

All of the ports on the 4500 are port type 'F'. This issue has me really puzzled as this configuration on both the server and switch is identical. Could this have anything to do with RDAC and the lack of drivers?

by: agcsupportPosted on 2009-08-20 at 09:54:46ID: 25144718

Please disregard previous post. The ports on the 4500 are port type GX by default. Appears that as a node is added or plugged into the port they switch to 'F'. Both ports that the troubled HBA's are plugged into still show as GX with a state of 'Inactive'. I manually changed to 'F' but that didn't make any difference.

Hmmmmmmm...

Have you tried a different cable? Another thing - QLogic HBAs won't connect to the switch until the OS driver is loaded - do you have the appropriate SAN-vendor approved driver? Download from here: http://driverdownloads.qlogic.com/QLogicDriverDownloads_UI/IBM.aspx?companyid=6 . Also - what is the light pattern on the cards? That should give us a good idea of what's going on: http://solutions.qlogic.com/KanisaSupportSite/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=10100&sliceId=SAL_Public&dialogID=127774428&stateId=1%200%20127576896

If all three LEDs are lit, the card hasn't initialised and the driver hasn't been loaded.

I was able to load the latest drivers and cards are now functioning. Thanks for your help.
