This beastie has a 800MHz FSB Intel E7230 chipset so has a LGA775 socket (Socket T)
Probably the CPU you currently have is a Pentium D 2MB L2 3GHz
Your choice of x64  LGA775 processors are:

Pentium Dual-Core (1.40 - 2.80 GHz)
Intel Core 2 Duo (1.60 - 3.33 GHz)
Intel Core 2 Extreme (2.66 - 3.20 GHz)
Intel Core 2 Quad (2.33 - 3.00 GHz)
Intel Xeon (1.86-3.40 GHz)
Intel 'Core' Celeron (1.60 - 2.40 GHz)

(From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_775)

A "... blisteringly fast response ..." sometimes means there was a bit too little research :-)

The 7230 chipset does not, according to Intel, support any Core architecture chips. Just because a system has a Socket 775 CPU socket doesn't mean it will work with ANY Socket 775 CPU.

Here's the list of supported CPU's for Intel's own 7230-based board:
http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/SE7230CA1E/sb/CS-022765.htm

... and this correspondends perfectly with all of the optional CPU's that a Proliant ML100 G3 was shipped with.

However ... with regard to your comment "... i want to upgrade the CPU to x64 ... ==> What CPU do you have installed now?   Many of the CPU's that were available with this system WERE 64-bit (anything with a 1 in the "Notes" column on the list at the Intel link above).   You may simply need to install a 64-bit OS.

Ouch! - But thanks for spotting that gary.
I guess only the D930 is going to make a succesful upgrade - unless you only have the Celeron D installed already.

Unaccepting!

The best approach here is ...

First, look up your current CPU on Intel's Processor Spec Finder to confirm whether or not it includes EM64T (64 bit technology) ... most Socket 775 P-IV's do.
http://processorfinder.intel.com/Default.aspx

If so, all you need to do is install an x64 OS.

If not, then purchase a compatible CPU from the list I provided earlier (any Pentium-D on that list will have x64 capability).

There's a fairly good chance your system already has an x64 compatible CPU.    You can easily find out by just downloading and running this little utility:
