Question

Seting up a ML110 G5 with RAID 1

Asked by: gjok

Hi,
I've just bought an HP Proliant ML110 G5 and I plan to add a 2nd HDD, and create a RAID 1 array using the onboard SATA RAID controller. (and install Win 2003 Server)

However, I dont have a clue where to start!

It came with an "Easy Setup CD" which seems to have all the drivers, etc, It also came with a small sheet of paper instructing me to download the "Embedded SATA RAID controller" from their website. This sheet also has a 6 step instruction to install the said driver (i.e. Press F10, enable RAID, Rebboot, press F8, etc, etc).

My question is does the Easy Setup CD do these 6 steps? or do I follow the 6 steps and then run the CD?
Also almost evey page I read sys make sure I have the lastest BIOS drivers and firmware. At what point do I do this? And there seems to be firmware drivers for multiple devices. Will the Setup CD not work if the firmware is old??

Please help. I've allways built my own PCs and this is my first 'branded' machine (HP) and I am overwhelmed with documentation.

Thanks,
G

Start from the BIOS. Update the BIOS revision. Then in BIOS set the drive into RAID mode.
After that during restart you will get RAID configuration claim message. Like press Ctrl + G to enter RAID configuration util.
Enter it and create the RAID1. Note. this process will erase both drives.

How do I update the BIOS revision?

I went to the HP page for this server:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3577715&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=3577708&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=1005#12212

...the first quicklink says "BIOS - System ROM", but the installation instructions say to download the exe to the HDD - but the disks are unformatted, and besides, you said YOUR instructions will earase both drives.

Actually you need the BIOS flash drive for USB key media. But if you are not familiar with this process then leave it alone.
Back to RAID. I meant that building up RAID will arise both drives. But you said you have no data there then it is ok.
Enter BIOS and change the drive mode as RAID (another variants AHCI, IDE or SATA).
After that press F10 and exit. It should ask you to enter RAID configuration utiltiy.

OK I will try that.

After I've done that, do I run the "Easy Setp CD", or just go ahead and install Windows 2003 server?

by: noxchoPosted on 2009-11-01 at 04:03:34ID: 25713435

Go ahead and install Windows 2003. It could ask for drivers from Driver CD of your motherboard. You will have to give them to it.
