Install Dell OpenManage on VMWare host
Hi experts - I'm new with VMware and taking over an existing setup. Running VMware ESXi, 5.0.0, 623860 with the vSphere client ver 5.0. Five Virtual machines are setup and we want to determine if any of the hard drives are having issues and so therefore are looking to install Dell OpenManage on one of the hosts. The instructions are not clear to me, i'm not sure I have the right version (http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/driverdetails?driverid=Y0WHR) . Would like to get clarification on how this works and the necessary steps involved. Maybe there is a better solution to analyze and monitor the hardware? Something built into VMware? The server is a Dell PowerEdge 2900.

thanks for the thorough answer to this Andrew! I'll review and get back to you. Since we will need to shut down the servers to do this it will have to be done after hours, so I won't be able to get back to you for a few days but I will asap.

This was easy to follow - thanks Andrew, it all worked great. I was confused about the first prerequisites indicating Download and Install the Dell OEM version of VMware sphere. I wasn't sure if we had that already installed or if I needed to upgrade to the dell version if i was running a generic version. I skipped that and followed everything else to get this working.

Hi Andy,
This worked until this weekend and now we get a "Login failed....Authentication failure. For more information, see online help." when trying to login to the Dell Openmanage.
Do I need to start a new question or can you offer any advice on this?
