In Vmware esx 5.0 what is the processor maximums for all the versions of server 2008. I couldnt find it anywhere in Vmware site or Microsoft. Is there anyway this calculation is being done.

My issue is recently I faced an issue where I had to rebuild the VMs just because I didn't pay much attention to CPU maximum. I installed server 2008 R2 STD and assigned 8 processor in ESX 4.1 but after a long search I found that only 4 CPU can be assigned for STD edition in a forum there was no article to support this information. Likewise I want to know in 5.0 & 5.5 what is the CPU maximums for all server 2008 editions & server 2012.
For virtual machines if I am not mistaken is 8 virtual CPU's but this is dependent on your host power of course.

Server 2008 R2 enterprise edition takes 8 CPU but not Std edition
Standard should be able to use a maximum of 4. On 2012 I don't think you have that problem.
If you need more that four virtual processors in standard edition, maybe we should talk about what you are trying to do. Perhaps standard is not the solution if you need more horse power. Anything that is heavy proc/memory/disk I/O should be on an enterprise solution.

Excellent! I will add it to my bag.

that's the solution
Make sure that the amount of virtual CPU's can be divided by the amount of cpuid.coresPerSocket in the VM (I am talking about the # of CPU's).
Example:
If your VM is created with 8 virtual CPUs, the coresPerSocket can only be 1, 2, 4, or 8.
Does that make sense?
