Specifying a replacement Hard drive for Dell R210
Hi, I've got some Dell R210 Servers running RAID 10 with PERC H200 with HR1KV - 146GB SAS 6GBPS 10K 2.5" HDs.
They are running out of warranty so I was looking to purchase a couple of spare HDs just in case.
Dell tell me they dont have this spec of drive any more and the sales guys tells me a larger capacity drive is not compatible.
Is this correct? If so any idea of a reputable supplier for a new drive of this spec (not ebay please!).
If not, I'd really appreciate something I can chuck back to the sales guy to get him to pull his finger out!
Cheers

THanks for your comment Seth. I'm not sure I follow your first paragraph. The drives currently installed are 10k drives.
Im in the UK and newegg doesnt have any stock.
So are you saying that a replacement drive must be 10k but it's OK to be a Larger capacity than the others in the Array?
Thanks.

understood
just about all lower-capacity drives now are 15k; don't believe they make 10k SAS drives at that size anymore
all drives in an array have to be the same speed, interface and size though if a replacement drive is larger than the others only the size of the others will be used (i.e. a 300gb in a bunch of 146gb drives would only utilize 146gb of that 300gb so there is space unused)
ASKER
so a 300GB 10k 2.5" SAS 6Gb would be ok, but I'd only be able to use 146GB?

You can put a 15K drive in as a replacement for a 10K just the same as you can put a higher capacity 10K drive in as a replacement.
I don't think HR1KV is a valid Dell part number for a disk -
HR1KV 0 SERVICE CHARGE..., DRIVER..., INTEL..., AHCI, R210II
If you're looking the part numbers up on Dell's support website then be aware that the part numbers are all wrong! it's making my life a nightmare. I think they have stripped the useless lines such as "service charge" and "information - label" from the description column but not stripped the corresponding part numbers out of that column so it's all shuffled up.

OK, to confirm, if i need to replace a 10k 146GB drive, a drive of 10K or 15K speed and over 146GB capacity (as long as its SAS 2.5") will work?
Cheers for the info about the dell site.

a 15k drive won't run at that speed while the others are 10k
it will run as fast as the slowest drive
it will run as fast as the slowest drive

Cool. Thats what I need to know. Many thanks for your help Andy and to Seth too.
I do think you should re-open and split points since Seth told you the 300GB disk would work.

OK, happy to do.
yes and no
yes in the sense that the drive is 15k which you can't put in the current raid array
no in the sense that the larger capacity drive (say, 300gb SAS) will work on that server
try this from newegg; anything 146gb 10k SAS would work. higher capacity (at 10k SAS) would work also but you can't use more than 146gb in the raid array
