External USB Drive with AC Adapter or without AC Adapter

I see a lot of 2TB External USB Drives without an AC Adapter advertized and I have never bought them. Always they came with a brick adapter.
From performance standpoint, do these perform the same as the ones with AC Adapter? If they provide the same functionality and performance, I am considering buying those without brick adapters.

have you compared the speed of USB 3 external drives - one with AC adapter and one without?
As I already mentioned, the adapter has absolutely nothing to do with performance and speed. It is only to provide the disk with enough amperes.

I heard from another IT professional that they prefer to have an external USB HD with AC adapter for server backups ... so I was not sure if they (ones with AC) perform better or not.

Correction...usb 3.0 takes 900 milliamps
Correction on last sentence ...you might not want to rely on devices powered solely from the usb built-in hub
