I have an CX300 and I want to add a new hard drive do i have to buy an EMC or can i use something else?

I have an EMCcx300 and i need to add just a single non raid drive for added storage.  EMC wants a fortune for just a 300gb drive, can i just replace one of my 73's with a seagate 300 gb fc or will that not work.

You have to buy EMC - the discs have EMC specific firmware and are formatted to 520 bytes per sector rather than the usual 512 bytes per sector. They are Fibre Channel drives (it's what makes them expensive...) rather than SCSI.

The other think you have to be aware of is that the FLARE code (the OS of the CX300) may have to be upgraded as earlier versions do not "understand" 300GB drives. The FLARE upgrade is included in the cost of your maintenance contract.

I think I'll just stick a SATA 300 controller in the server and hang a 750gb drive off of it...
total cost is $300 instead of 2500 for a 300gb emc.

Thanks for your input.
