RAID Array Question

What will happen if I replace a hard drive in a RAID array 0 (mirroring) with a drive that is larger?  This is a hardware RAID.

Will I lose that extra space or can it be used as extra storage?

For example...my two drives now are 500 gig each but I have a 2 TB drive.  What will happen to the remaining 1.5 TB?

As the others have pointed out you have what looks like a Typo in your question.

RAID-0 is just plain old striping, gives good speed, but has NO redundandancy
 where-as
RAID-1 is Mirroring.

As @rindi says if it is RAID-0 and you replace a disk, you will be be removing half your data. In this scenario, do full backup , remove disks and replace with bigger disks, rebuild RAID and restore backup.

For RAID-1 you can remove a disk and replace, but only the original capacity will be utilised. Some RAID controllers will allow you to extend the volume others won't
The above statement is only theoretically true: "you will be be removing half your data". As in RAID 0 the data is equally spread across the disks, removing one disk makes the data on the rest of the disks useless, as there will always be something missing. So in practice you loose ALL data.
@rindi - semantics

@lewyh - are you replying to a different question to the rest of us?

The OP questions were answered several times in different ways by @Robocat, @Rindi and myself.

It didn't help that the original question confused RAID-0 and Mirroring, and Mirroring as you know is RAID-1, and it is telling that the author hasn't responded to any comments since posting this question 17 days ago!

So telling huh.  I think that is what this forum is for...for people like me that don't fully know what you guys know and can ask questions @Gerald Connolly.  But if that makes you feel better to belittle someone that is cool.

I have been out of town for two weeks.

Thanks to those of you that get on here to help like @lewyh even if you didn't notice that the question was already basically answered.  At least you were trying.

BTW, even though I am an idiot with a typo I was able to recover the data and recover the raid 1 and it is running successfully now.
Actually Joe, my comments were aimed at @lewyh and not at you, and as you pointed out he didnt read the reply trail very well.

I wasnt trying to belittle you, and i wasnt even the first person to point out you had confused the RAID levels, i am sorry i seemed to have offended you but as i said my reply was aimed at lewyh, my original reply was meant to clarify what the others had already said
Gerald...thanks for the response...this is what I was referring to: and it is telling that the author hasn't responded to any comments since posting this question 17 days ago!

No worries...all is good.
