Asked by coolkev99 in SBS Small Business Server, Domain Name Service (DNS), Consulting
Experts, I work part time for a small business (about 30 users) doing some of their IT support needs. They have a small firewall/gateway/router (watchguard) device handling DHCP which used to be fine, however recently we setup a Windows SBS 2003 R2 setup with a domain. Of crouse the Windows server now wants to handle DNS and login authentication. We have shared folders setup on the server and also use it for central AV admin.
However recently they moved much of thier day to day busniess systems to Web app (cloud) based applications. This keeps me up at night as if that server goes down they are going to be completely dead in the water. No internet, no file shares, no nothing. Whle the server is imaged daily, it still is a huge concern.
I need advice on how to handle this as this "side job" is starting to get a little out of my league. How can I get a little more redundancy going here? Should I get rid of that firewall/gateway that handles the dhcp? Is there a way to keep the internet going if that server goes down? Should I recommend they get someone to manage servers for them at this point or can 1 man on the side still setup something for them?
Let me know if you have questions on the setup, I am unsure of my options and would appreciate thoughts and suggestions!
