Dell Optiplex GX1 ( No Boot)
Hi
Hope someone can help. I have an old Dell Optiplex GX1 I use for a second PC backups etc. My work is going to start using Linux on thier servers and I want to get ahead of the game so I thought I would convert this machine to a Suse Linux box.
I rebooted the machine and entered system settings to force the computer to boot from the CD, then did ALT B to save and reboot. Absolutely nothing.
Well not quite. The power light comes on, the CD and floppy lights come on and I hear the HDD start up but nothing appears on the screen. I looked at Dell's web site ant tried to follow some instructions for reverting System Settings to factory default but as I did not get and response when pressing the Caps, Scroll and Num locks (No Lights on keyboard) I assume nothing is happening. I share the Keyboard and Video through a KVM with my primary machine and all is working there no problems.
I think I remember that the Settingscan be reset by doing something inside the box but cannot find out what on the Dell site so maybe I am imagining it. (Getting Old and Grey :-<)
If anyone has any flashes of genius and can advise would be grateful.
Mike
PS just incase it was a corrupt Suse boot CD I tried my Genuine Windows XP CD same results.

Try plugging in the monitor directly to the computer. Do you at least hear the BIOS beep?
using the lock keys then the key sequence only works when your in the bios and it not getting that far what your going to need to do is use the rest bios jumper on the motherboard.
Optiplex GX series have SEVERE bulging capasitors problem. AMAZING how they didnt do a recall ! dell classic. First thing check your motherboard. www.badcaps.net

Errr a slight embarrassment here guys. While I was doing a reboot evertime I never actually totally powered of the machine. After kicking it last night when I shut my system down I found that this morning it worked as advertised. I am asking advice from moderators re honouring of points as you gents took the time to answer
