How do I play an .mp4 file with Windows Media Player? Currently it won't do so.

The solution offered may well be a good one. Unfortunately, however, I am a wholly non-commercial home computer user, and by no means an expert myself, and was merely looking for a 'quick fix' to enable me to view some video clips produced by a friend on his mobile phone. Your solution seemed too elaborate (2 separate downloads etc.) for my purposes, so instead I went for the second posted response which, inter alia, directed me to a site from which I could download the relevant codec. That seems to have worked!

shasunder's solution worked for me, in that I've now downloaded the relevant codec, and have just played the clips on Windows Media Player, which was I wanted to do in the first place. Thank you!
