XP looses connection to 98 share after SP2 install

I'm looking at a small LAN for a rather impatient client, and I'm feeling the pressure. When I entered, they had 2 Windows 98 computers and 1 XP computer (which didn't have SP2 installed), set up in a peer to peer file sharing setup. One of the windows 98 computers hosts a file share and also a print share. They reported their priority was the XP box which had brutally slow internet access. I think I've found the cause and remedy for the slow access (DNS server lookup, I entered specific public servers instead of the local DSL router). However, in the process of cleaning up the computer (updates, anti-virus, defrag etc.), I applied SP2 and now the XP boxes access to the 98 share is not working.

I'm finding this particularly difficult to comprehend as both computers are connected to the same hub. Even more strangely, the second 98 computer continues to access the share happily, and the XP box is connecting to the internet without problem. Just to confound me further, the 98 host and XP boxes are unable to ping each other. Something else I noticed was that the computers all have spaces in their names, i.e. 'monitoring pc', 'accounting pc' etc. I don't know if this is significant. Their setup is scarily outdated.
