A client uses AOL for their email, and has started having trouble sending email using the AOL SMTP server. Receiving is OK. They are on Mac Leopard using IMAP on Mac Mail. The SMTP server specified actually does test with the connection doctor, and username and password are verified. This is happening on multiple computers and a smartphone, all set up to sync with their AOL account.

I'm thinking the trouble is on AOL's side. Is there anything I can try to before involving AOL, which is bound to be a real nightmare?

I'm helping a friend who has been using AOL for many years. Suddenly her AOL address book has been populated by hundreds of new entries for people she doesn't know, as well as dozens of MAILER DAEMON messages, from e-mails that she didn't didn't send. I am aware of harvester viruses, that send e-mails after collecting e-mail addresses, but I am not sure how the address book entries were created. These mysterious e-mail address book entries appear on both her AOL browser software, as well as her AOL web mail (when using Internet Explorer, checked from multiple computers). ...
