Crystal XI not showing black areas in OLE graphics

I am trying to use the "graphic location" setting to dynamically assign footers on docs produced out of crystal. Picture files are jpegs. All seems to be ok except for the fact that the black portion of the graphics come out as white (ie blank) in the crystal report only. Red, blue and green behave normally individually, its just the black (and dark grey) that is a problem.

I'm using a SQL Server 2005 DB for the data, and placing the jpegs in windows directories. Jpegs created in corel draw.

Any help would be appreciated as I am not well versed in crystal.
