Can't access HTTPS sites from behind proxy server on just this PC.

All the PC's on this network have to go through a proxy server. On one PC however, you cannot access any HTTPS sites - you either get nothing (it simply appears to give up the request and the browser stays on the current page) or a server not found / dns error message comes up. If you remove the proxy server settings, everything's fine. The proxy server however is needed for certain sites, one of which is HTTPS. On any other PC within the network, access is fine, even with the same proxy server user credentials - so I don't think it's anything to do with the proxy server.

I've tried re-registering a bunch of dlls (softpub.dll, wintrust.dll, initpki.dll, dssenh.dll, rsaenh.dll, gpkcsp.dll, sccbase.dll, slbcsp.dll, cryptdlg.dll), used sfc / scannow, run chkdsk /R, tried to do a system restore (tried about 10 different restore points none of which were successful), reinstalled IE6 (via the ie.inf file), disabled all plug-ins, tried firefox (same problem), made sure SSL 2, SSL 3 and TLS 1 have been enabled / disabled (tried every combination), cleared the SSL Cache, cleared temporary internet files, cleared cookies, checked hosts file, flushed dns...

This is my last chance before a reinstall for a machine that otherwise seems to be absolutely fine (except perhaps for its reluctance to perform a system restore).
