Change CSS with Javascript

How could you change a css class with javascript? E.g.

<style type="text/css">
.blue{
background-color:blue;
color: aliceblue;
}
</style>

I would like to change the properties of this class, for example make the background navyblue.
I know you can do document.getElementById('id').style.background="navyblue" but I will have many properties in the class and it would be just too cumbersome to change every single property, especially since there are many elements using this class.

I have tried putting the style in a span/table, and then attempted to change the innerHTML of the span/table, but it didn't work.

Also, just switching classnames won't work because it's mainly the user entering a colour in a textbox and then I will change the class properties with that variable.
