getElementById returns null values in IE 6

This script works fine in Firefox, but has issues in IE 6.

It is meant to loop though a series of HTML links and set their style to visible (I only want the links to appear if Javascript is enabled).

On IE 6, I get the alert(x) - which is only supposed to happen if the value x does not find an element with an id of switchLink1 though switchLink30. The alert says "null" but immediately afterward it runs though all the "switchLink"-ID'd elements and changes their style to visible as I intended.

Not only that, but it only works if the alert code is there. If I comment out alert(x); within the ELSE statement, the script does nothing in IE. This confounds me. What am I doing wrong?
