I am the webmaster of a new Open Source website I created and am now trying to deploy on the Web for a Windows-centric software development company. The IT department is in control of the Testing, Staging, and Production servers and is installing Windows 2003, Apache, PHP, and MySQL but have very little knowledge of PHP or Open Source. Their history is to lock out the Internet and forbid FTP access. This is corporate policy. The problem is, Joomla! requires FTP for interactive processes such as requested downloads of documents as well as uploading of content (which they want to happen on the development server and then moved like software to the website).
I need advice on showing the IT department how to configure PHP and Apache to secure the servers while allowing Joomla! to function properly. The testing is not allowed access to the Internet (as an example of their fear of hacking). The IT department is using a software development model and business process for web deployment. I need ammunition about security and safety of allowing FTP and other web services as well as Production-based management of the CMS.
